cockerel moulting

Recommended Posts

hi, I have 5 pekin bantams, 1 cockerel 4 hens. I was given them because someone I know was relocating, they have just started laying so I put them at around 30 weeks. There were two cockerels but they started to fight so now there is only one (no one didnt kill the other). my cockerel appears to be moulting, in all other respects he seems fine. His crest is full, red and standing straight. He is doing is male duties as well. Is it normal for him to moult at this time of year?

I'm putting it down to coming into sexual maturity. Before coming to me he was on a small holding with another 20 odd hens. There was another cockerel who had to be the biggest thing i've seen, so my cockerel was a bit sheepish. Now he runs the roost, crows in the morning and has started to mate with the girls could this cause his plumage to change?

Egluntyne is right, sounds as though he has reached full maturity and is growing through his impressive 'big boy' plumage. You might like to give him some extra protein to help the new feathers 'hatch'; chick crumbs or meal worms are good for this.

this morning he confirmed it, you can really see his new plumage coming through, i'll get some mealies on the way home tonight.
