prolapsed vent

Recommended Posts

Am in dire need of some advice. My 10month old hybrid chook has what appears to be a prolapsed vent (part of the inner bowel poking out bit like piles). I have tried to reduce it (push it back in) but it appears again. I really need some advice about how to manage this. Please help.

I have tried reducing the prolapse several times. Smothered area in germaloids (all i had available) have spoken to vet this morning who suggests trying sugar and the pushing it back in. She has water and I will give her some weetabix now. Does anyone have any other ideas. I am ringing the vet back at 8 when day staff are in, I will take her there but I am afraid that it may not be good news. Feeling a bit teary. Any other advice peeps?

If you have not had much success all you can do really is to keep the area clean and moist to prevent the tissue drying out. You could make a makeshift sling out of bandage to hold the prolapse up a bit to take the pressure off which will help to maintain a healthy circulation. It is really something that needs accessing by the vets now. Good luck and keep us posted.

When Harriet had a prolapse, the vet said that it is reasonably easy to operate - I think he would have removed the Oviduct?

But unfortunately, by the time I could get her to the avian vet (48 hours - it was the weekend and the emergency vets are not chicken-friendly), it had started to get infected so he thought it would not be appropriate to operate in this case as she was likely to succomb to sceptacemia (sorry about spelling).

FIngers crossed for your girl.

Hi my warren rachel came out of her house yesterday with a prolaspse blood all down her backend feathers so i tried pushing it back in but when i put her down on the floor it just came out again and to make matters worse she kept pecking it i think thats what all the blood was so put it back again and put her in a cage but when she went for a poo out it came again she was just over 2and half i had to make the decision to have a friend despatch her ive never done this before and have been racked with guilt ever since all i can think of is she came out of her house on a lovely sunny morning and she didnt know she would be dead by 10.30 sorry i know this sounds stupid anyways hope you can try and sort your chicken out leanne.

Thankyou all for your help and advice. I took my chook to the vets yesterday. The vet removed an egg that she said was probably causing the problem. The prolapse was inflammed obviously and it appeared that the prolapse tissue was damaged either by the other chooks or the chook herself pecking at it. I did isolate her as soon as I found the prolapse but this damage must have occurred before. Anyway the vet gave me various options which mainly revolved around suturing to prevent the prolapse but they said the prognosis was not normally good and it was up to me. I didn't feel happy about it but the chicken was put to sleep as I thought it was the most humane thing and I can't believe I snivelled quite so much over a chicken. Such simple creatures with simple needs which give such pleasure and I just feel so sorry. Anyway I must learn to dispatch chickens myself as I won't tell you what the vet charged and my OH nearly did away with me. Any advice, not that i am intending to dispatch chickens on a regular basis.

Thanks all of you.

Katie
