LittleOwl
Well, Sybil. who was VERY rattly and sneezy on Monday, appears to be perking up with her Baytril. She is no longer rattling, and only sneezing when she is stressed (i.e., when I have to give her her meds! ). The vet advised not to isolate her as he didn't believe it was contagious - she had been sneezing for at least 12 days by the time I took her to the vet so he believed that the others would have showed some signs by then if it was, and thought she'd get more stressed on her own. So we are isolating her in her own little crate in the pen when she gets up until she lays her egg (so we can discard it), then letting her out with the others. We were about to worm them all when we had to take her to the vet, and obviously held off till she was better and off the antibiotics. Now, this morning there was loads of poop in the nestbox (someone obviously slept there last night), and I have just gone to check on Honey and her bottom end is covered in poop. She has been with us for 2 weeks and still hasn't started to lay, even though her sibling started a week ago. So, I guess my questions are; does it sound like Honey could need worming, or is it maybe just that she has been lying in poop all night and not been cleaned? Am I right to hold off on the worming front till Sybil is finished her antibiotics or shall I just start anyway? Or should I just keep a closer eye on Honey for a day or two? Any advice would be greatly appreciated Goodness, this chicken-keeping is never restful is it?? It's a steep learning curve for us newbies!! Egluntyne
Sounds like she has sat in a poop all night to me. I would hold off with worming until the antibiotics are finished, and for a few days more after that, so as not to bombard them with meds. Daphne
I agree with Egluntyne I hope Sybil continues to improve for you!
LittleOwl
Thanks both! That helps! Sybil seems a little wheezier this morning, but that could just be because she doesn't like being in her little isolation chamber while watching the others romp around! It's amazing how you watch out for every little thing!! I so hope she keeps getting better. Now I only have to give Honey a good talking to to find out why she thinks she can get away with not laying - and she is a columbine I am waiting excitedly to see what colour she will lay! Freeloader!
