Is broodiness catchy?

Recommended Posts

One of my buff Sussex bantams went broody a couple of weeks ago. I've done everything except put her in a broody cage (I don't have one). Anyway, I've been looking after her and making sure she's not got creepy crawlies, etc. and is eating properly. Since then, my other buff Sussex bantam has gone broody and yesterday, two Marans were squashed in the nest box flat as fluffy pancakes and growling for England! Not sure what to do with so many broodies. Do they set each other off, or is it the time of year, OR is it a purebreed thing?

A bit of everything - I don't think 'medically' we can say broodiness is catching but it does seem to go in waves...one out, at least some out, if not all out :D Mostly I'd say its the hormones at this time of the year, and personally I think hybrids can go broody as much as many PBs; which is good or bad depending on your point of view!

I would like to add that as of this afternoon, Elvis 1 (one of my lovely Legbars) has also joined the broody crew (now 5 girls). I agree that it's hormones gone mad. I noticed that when I turfed her out of the nestbox, she strutted around and then flapped her wings angrily and gave an almighty chicken screech - a bit like an angry woman with pms. No doubt she was swearing at me.
