Because Evie isn't feeling so good I've cooked some extra pasta today but as they are being wormed can she have any ?

I know they're only supposed to eat the pellets with the worming powder on when they're being wormed.

No, the advice is to cut out all treats and only to feed the pellets mixed with Flubenvet for the full 7 days.

 

be careful not to give them too much carbohydrate; as previously posted, it can make them fat very quickly, they will stop laying and be more inclined to get a prolapse. Try fresh dark greens, or some of the Garvo treats.

Oh well, I did just give them some grass and Evie did eat a little bit of that.

Thanks for that - can they free range whilst being wormed or does that defeat the object?

We are worming ours at the moment and aren't freeranging them because of it - but don't know what others do.

I f you give them anything except the treated pellets it defeats the object of putting a measured quantity of wormer in the food. If a chicken doesn't get the full amount of pellets she won't get the necessary amount of wormer to be effective, ie you might as well not bother!

I dosed up a small pot of mixed corn with Flubenvet and gave them just a little a day for a treat! All carefully weighed out according to the dosage instructions.

Flubenvet only really works properly if it is given spread out over the day in the pellets. It will not have the same effect if the chooks get the whole dose in one go, eg in a grape or a small amount of corn.

Sorry, my post was ambiguous (up too early with the chooks!)... it wasn't the whole day's dose in the corn, just the scaled down proportion for that small amount of corn - I can't remember what the dose is without looking it up but if you put x grams in 1kg, then I put a tenth of that in 100g of corn so it was dosed exactly as it should be - and given in addition to the normal dosed pellets they ate throughout the day, so it wasn't a one hit wonder but rather a continuation of the day's food and dosed at the same strength as the pellets.

When worming the chooks i shut them in the run for the whole seven days, no treats and no free ranging. It's the only way to be sure they get their dose.

As Shoura has said; there's little point in dosing them if they aren't eating all the medication. Cut out any treats and restrict free ranging to the barest minimum, and only late in the day for an hour or so. They will eat the pellets if they aren't offered anything else.

 

If your birds are holding out for treats then you need to look at what you are allowing them to eat... their layers mash or pellets should constitute the main part of their diet, with just a few (preferably non-carb) treats at the end of the day. Meal worms or dark green veg make excellent treats and aren't as harmful to their metabolism as rice, pasta or bread. Too much corn will make them fat as well; one bird should only have roughly a maximum of a small egg cup of corn per day.
