Extremely Broody!!

Recommended Posts

Any ideas anyone?

Had 2 broody's last week and put them in cages from Wednesday till Sunday night (5pm) one back to normal and other still straight back in nestbox when we let her out.

Will freerange if we let her out but straight back on at bedtime, she's still in the cage in the conservatory tonight and still barking/cooing, would love to put some eggs under her but we are away next week and then again in July

Should I let her come out herself or persist with the cage (which worked last September)

My black orp is also a broody problem at the moment - I have blocked off the nesting box at night, thrown her off 8+ times a day, shut the cube door by day, dunked her in cold water - whatever I do she remains broody and is back on the nest at every opportunity. It is just a shame the cube and both Eglus are full at the moment and I have no more room for her and some hatching eggs.

She is weakening if she's happy not to sit in the daytime. I'd sin bin her for another day or two, not allowing her out to free range. The conservatory may not be the best place to site it though, as she really needs to "cool off".

Thanks all,

Will keep her in another 24hrs and see, we chose the conservatory as the temp dropped so much the other night and there is no heating in there so it was only residual from the daytime.

By tomorrow though she will have been in there a week give or take a couple of hours, is it normal to be that persistant?

I have got 2 broodies at the mo!! I was just making sure, they do come off the nest after 3 weeks dont they? Or was i just dreaming this. I dont have any hatching eggs for them, they are just sitting on ordinary eggs so they wont hatch. I'm pretty sure that she is coming up to the 3 weeks, but the other one has got a bit longer to go. Its not bad for them to be broody is it, apart from the parasites which i think dont seem to be a problem at the mo *touch wood*. At first i did try to stop her from going broody by taking her off the nest; closing the cube door, but then the others would lay their eggs in the run, normally down the bottom where its hard to reach lol; and then shutting off the nest box but then she just sat on the roosting bars and went broody there! And no one is in all day so i had no choice but to just let her get on with it!
