Our_Chooks
I am new to being a mother of chickens and am looking for some boiled egg advice. Not only does the shell stick to the egg (which could be down to freshness) but there is alot of white water also in the egg, the eggs seem to be ok, cakes were good so was the scrambled and fried eggs, but am a little worried to hand them out to the neighbours. Someone please help!!
AJuff
Unfortunatley they are too fresh!!! Eggs need to be at leat two weeks old to hard boil. Something to do with the air sac. I'm sure someone will be along soon to explain all.
docsquid
Yes, my mother-in-law had the same problem with our girls' eggs - thought there was something wrong with them!
Chucky Mama
I agree, too fresh! Just shows how old the eggs are that we buy in the shops.
Space Chick
If you peel them in ice water it can help, but it is because the eggs are too fresh, hence why they are so fab in other ways. The best way in my opinion when they are really fresh is poached
Our_Chooks
Thankyou all for your help, I will try and keep some eggs for that amount of time and try again x
cluckingmad
I am a very sad woman and can reveal all!! Egg shells are air permeable, so a developing chick won't suffucate, however this means when freshly laid there isn't much if any of an air gap at the top of the egg... after a little while, air builds up in the egg as it diffuses in through the shall so you get that classic gap when you hard boil them And now I really do need to get out more.. And yes, it really does show how old the eggs we buy in the shop must be!
Snowy
If you keep them at room temperature, rather than in the fridge, then they will be good to boil after about 5 days. Before that, poach'em - much nicer anyway!
JenandBerry
How interesting, shame my little boy's favorite is hard boild, will have to get him to change to poached trouble is DH has only just got timings for boiled right so he will have to start again
txswanie
I have the same problem, when peeling the shell off some of the white comes away. I found if you boil them and put them into the fridge for a while the shell comes off easier. That only works if you want cold boiled eggs. I suppose if you had a classic boiled egg you would be eating it out of the shell anyway so you wouldn't notice. I have been putting the slightly mangled eggs into a cup and adding a small amount of butter. Mash them up, lovely.
sezra
I am not getting my chickens until next week but I am finding this forum brilliant for advice and information. I had been wondering why the eggs my friends kindly gave me had this problem when I boiled them and now I know. Thank you!
