angusrose
Hi all, just a quick question about fish in a chicken's diet - is it safe? I tipped some tinned sardines into their feed this morning after not being able to face them myself. They wolfed them down in no time. Is it ok to feed them fish and does their enthusiasm for them indicate a dietary deficiency? Regards Angus
Christian
Hello Angus, I wouldn't say that it indicates a dietary deficiency, just that they like sardines! Fish is great for providing extra protein when they need it eg during a moult, but I wouldn't feed it too often.
angusrose
Thanks for that Christian. The question about the dietary deficiency was down to the fact that they've just finished being broody. Thanks Angus
Cinnamon
The only thing I would be aware of with some fish is the small bones. Tuna,in spring water NOT brine is OK though
The Dogmother
They love fish, and it is good for them in limited amounts. being omnivores, they will eat any 'meat' they can get their beaks around, but DEFRA guidelines are that we may not feed them any animal products or by products, which includes tinned fish. My girls eat it. and I shall continue to feed it to them every once in a while, but I couldn't possibly recommend that you do the same..... chickyhazel
Some people feed cuttlefish for protein and calcium, so fish are fine. Remember that chickens can't have salted fish, including fish in brine, and don't feed it too often.
