quickcluck
Well Layla, has been doing the broody thing. She's been hogging the nest box on and off for a while, plus when I kicked her out for the second time yesterday I noticed that she'd pluck all her chest feathers out She is one mega bald chook Straight into the broody cage with as much hissing and spitting as when I chucked her out of the nest box Today when giving her a treat I find an EGG in the cage...... I thought broodies couldn't lay...... Should I let her out of solitary or keep her in as I'm feeling REALLY bad..... Help!
Torrin
Think I read on here the other day about someone's chook going broody and it appeared she still laid for a couple of days, so I wouldn't think that rules out her broodiness.
Ginny
They can still lay when broody, but don't usually, which is probably why you found this unusual. It may be that another hen laid an egg and she just sat on it though? If she is broody and sees eggs she will jump at the chance to hatch it! quickcluck
Think I will leave her in over night again. The egg was in the broody cage so she is the only Culprit. I really want to snap her out of it, as I was shocked about her feathers.
ValerieR
can I ask where you put the cage and do you raise it off the ground?
quickcluck
It's a dog cage that I use upside down so the tray is on the top to stop her being poo'd on, and it's on house bricks to let the air flow underneath.....
cluckingmad
Yep, they can indeed lay for a bit when broody - I agree with continuing to sin bin her for a bit longer
