Isabel
Starting to panic ... getting chickens on Sat (touch wood). They'll be coming up to 7 weeks - 3 of them. Have - house, run, feed (although might need chick crumbs I think), bedding, Diatom, apple-cider vinegar, drinker, feeder. Do I need grit? What age should they get it from? Eventually they will fr but they're a bit small at the moment so I'll keep them in the run. Would Stalosan F be a good buy? Don't have any first aid stuff - will get purple spray. Is anything else necessary from day 1. What about treats? Are they a bit young or should i have some mealworms/corn handy. Is there anything else I haven't thought of? Loads, me thinks! Thanks Isabel
Isabel
Oh, and if they haven't been wormed, should I worm them? I've got poultry shield- should I spray the house before they inhabit it?
Christian
Loads of info in the FAQs section here Isabel Sounds like you have everything covered. Don't worry too much about first aid kit and lots of supplements for now. You can get them as and when! I wouldn't worry about worming them just yet. Wait until they are 18 weeks or so and let them settle in first.
Ginny
You sound like you have been trying to think of everything possible! You need a coop, run, feeders and drinkers to start off with, along with some food, (growers or layers pellets depending on how old your chickens will be) grit, and some corn. Grit is probably only necessary if they are laying though, as they need it to make the shells on their eggs, otherwise they will become weaker and thinner. I found that corn is the best tool you can use to familiarize yourself with them, and make them more friendly and less wary of you. They really love it, but shouldn't be fed too much. First-aid kit shouldn't be needed unless you are expecting them to injure themselves! As it is spring-summer they probably won't need any vitamins or extra stuff in their food and water, but might as it gets colder in Autumn. However, you might want some mite powder or similar if you have a wooden coop, because it is about now that they breed and infestations start. Hope some of this is helpful! Isabel
Thanks for your replies ... feel a bit less flustered now (although I've just added up what I've spent on these chickens ) so will just get some Stasolan for now and some corn (assuming they're old enough for it at 7w) and will worry about worms and grit much later on! Thanks again
Torrin
OMG never add up what your chickens are costing you Think my husband did the sums a while ago and told me every egg I was eating cost about £2.50 Best just to enjoy the experience!! Of course I could add up what the dogs have cost over the years, and they don't even lay eggs!!
