Gelbel
What are your feathered friends up to in this wonderful weather today? Mine are FRing for the first time in 2 weeks (as I was away last weekend) and after digging the garden, eating all the slugs and snails and topping up the poo all over the grass and steps they have been having a wonderful time dust batheing in the soil. I've spent ages poo picking today, got the Stalosan F on the base of the runs, put a shed load of louse powder and Diatom in with the Hemcore - and they ignored the lot (which is very unusual) preferring the messy soil. Cissie and Madge are now sun batheing and trying to use the grass as a dust bath. Ada is having a snooze in her dust bath in the borders. Ain't life grand? Guest
Mine are dust bathing in mums flower beds while the Marsh Daisy's settle in. Mum isnt happy at the dustbathing. She thought it was cute in my flower beds but in hers she hates the chickens in hers.
Aimee
Have let mine out to FR for the fisrt time today - we brought them home last Sunday. They popped out of the run for ten minutes then went back in and have stayed their since. Should I let them work it out at their own pace or 'encourage' them to be a little more adventurous? Also, I'm scared about my cats. They've been watching and waiting all week and I'm terrified they'll try and pounce. I've a water spray at the side of me in case I need to intervene and sitting waiting. Do I need to be so edgy? Looking forward to them exploring further - have a great area of dust and scrub land for them to discover!
Guest
I sat out with mine to make them feel comfortable. Dont worry about the cats chickens can sort them out. Our neighbours cat had 2 peck holes in its leg for trying to chase them they turned and attacked. Just sit outside with the hens they will feel so much more comfortable. Gelbel
Ohhhh Aimee I see you are not too far away - lovely weather for a change eh? Let your girls do their own thing, at their own pace - just be there to keep an eye on them. Can't really comment on cats although there are two or three about. However, with my last girls a cat did come across them early one morning while they were tucked up in their run. The girls went absolutely potty and, although the cat wanted to attack (I'd got to the back door with all the noise by this stage) the sheer noise made it change its mind and run away quicker than if it'd had a rocket up it's bot. Never seen another cat in the garden since - which is great news as there are no more horrible calling cards. I so want to let the girls have a play out front as we were 'visited' last week. Aimee
I know! Not many sunny days up north so far this year but looks like the weather is on the up now. So far, so good. I've spent the aft pottering in the garden an keeping a close eye on what's going on. Only one worrying moment with the cats and that was me shrieking on seeing Gertie about to land in the pond as she flapped away from them. Now finished my work and watching them scratch about whilst enjoying the wonders of wireless broadband.
