squidsin
Goujon, who is the oldest of my chooks at 8 and a half months, did this really weird thing today. Normally she is quite shy of humans - although getting bolder by the day - but this afternoon, she not only let me stroke her, but she went all flat and stuck her wings up and wiggled in a weird way. Is this crouching? Also, she keeps going into the nesting box (followed by my other two nosy pekins, who are not showing any signs of laying and I think are younger than the breeder told me as they still have quite small, pale combs, although they've both bulked up a bit in the month I've had them). Could I be getting an egg soon, maybe?!

squidsin
She laid! My very first egg, this morning - I am THRILLED! Even though I know that's the point of having chooks, it still seems pretty amazing and cool.
Redwing
Its an amazing thing when a hen first lays congratulations I often wonder what the hen thinks the first time it happens!

Gelbel
You're probably looking at her to lay within 10 days or so. Not all girls crouch - the vast majority do and it is a brilliant way of telling that the first egg is on its way. Head girl, Cissie, crouches every I 'ask' her. Sometimes she'll just stand still to let me pick her up. Madge tries so hard not to crouch - and most of the time manages to stop herself. Ada, "Moi, deferring to a hooman? Not me!!! No way!!! NEVER!!!"

chickyhazel
Crouching is a good sign to look for so keep trying. Their first crouch is often at a really random thing, like reaching over to open the egg port, hoping...
