Chook diary from the North!!

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks thanks for that. My girls are on pellets and always have been I didn't change it as I felt they may become fussy and just pick at the mash and eat the bits they want. Excess calcium is a problem I used to keep an Iguana and they have really complex nutritional needs and it was excess calcium that killed him in the end his liver became enlarged and 'fryable' so I don't want to go down that road if I can help it. I checked her at the weekend and she doesn't look sore and there are new feathers coming through so it may just have been an excessive moult at the back end but why she has lost them again given that they only really grew back a matter of weeks ago is a mystery and Betty has lost none of hers :?::?: I still haven't seen any aggression so fingers crossed.

Hi Louise looks like they will be getting all the nutritional needs met with the pellets, with the mash you can see that it seperates and I mix mine but the chooks still pick out what they want. Calcuim is a tricky one I wouldn't add it if they are eating pellets maybe a tonic or poultry spice might help the feathers grow back I know a lot of people use this after the chooks have moulted just to give them an extra boost.................

Good luck and I will cross my fingers too........ :lol::lol::lol:

Chickens still seem okay but this I found highly amusing. One of my goldfish in the pond is off colour so in great chicken fashion I though hmm maybe there is a forum out there where I can get help so I I go to do a search and lo and behold I find one and very quickly I think I have an answer I am reading all this stuff and my mind is thinking god some of these nutters need to get a life - goldfish how can they find them sooooooooooooooooooooo interesting :oops::oops::oops: Then I thought about the girls and how much I bore everyone with their antics nutter me thinks if the cap fits wear it :!::!: I may post a pic of myself later as one of the girls here is rehoming rabbits and has a couple in today in transit to new homes so I may go in front of the camera with little Peter it is the only way I will have my pic taken if there is an animal to cuddle :!::!: No promises though

Well I'm glad you all survived my mug shot and I'm not keeping the rabbit it was just a prop to get me in front of the camera he is cute but at only 8 weeks old he is going to be a monster bunny and there isn't enough grass to go round in my garden and the chooks come first but I have eggciting news :D

Go Betty go Betty go Betty we have our first egg :shock::shock::shock:

I was asking them when they were going to start paying for their keep and lo and behold there was an egg in the eglu. Not in the nest box but it was there and whole clever girl Betty. I have posted a pic and tried to name the album but it didn't come up with a name so I don't know what I'm doing wrong :? The egg is sitting in one of the little omlet egg boxes. I was surprised at how big it was I was expecting the first to be quite small but it is a reasonable size.

I am going to go edit my questionaire now as I have had my first egg :D

Beautiful Betty...Congratulations on 1st egg :!::D

I hadn't noticed the pics of your girls until yesterday, when I went to see lovely pic of you, Louise.

Betty & Wilma are gorgeous, & now you have an egg too..brilliant news!

How did you know it was Betty? Did you see her visiting Eglu?

I think Wilma & Chuckles won't be long now....the race is on! (I think she's waiting for me to go away for 1 night at Easter, so a son can collect it)

I think it must be Betty as she is further developed and has been making alot of noise for a couple of weeks now. Wilmas comb is now beginning to redden up so she will not be long but I think the first one is down to Betty. Until I get two eggs on one day I won't know when Betty starts as they look the same. I am hoping she lays one on Friday when I am off work so I can tell for sure who dun it :lol::lol::lol:

Hi Nicola, Yes the bunny is a monster I think it is a very big breed of rabbit and the people who have taken Peter have actually taken two of them. The litter had 14 in it!!!!!!!! but only 7 survived so far Julie has found homes for 5 she just has 2 females left to place but it isn't going to be a problem as they are so cute just now.

I am going to eat the egg on Friday I know I should save it for Sunday but I am working and with the clock change I won't have time to cook an egg for breakfast. Clever Betty knew she had to produce in time for Easter :lol:
