annettec Posted June 1, 2010 Share Posted June 1, 2010 (edited) Went out to see Chickens this am to find our lovely new 8 week old Legbar in with the Hybrid girls have no idea how long she had managed to get in with them or even when she was in the right part last evening. She is very bloody, breathing just eyes shut quite floppy. I am so upset and feel soooo guilty as can't understand how she got in there she wasn't last night. Have called the vets and am waiting for a call. Have wrapped her in a towel and put her on a warm hot water bottle have tried syringing some water but until i hear from the vets just don't know what else to do. Tutti Frutti Posted June 1, 2010 Share Posted June 1, 2010 Oh no I am no expert but I think she's suffering from shock as well as blood loss. Do you have a cat basket? Or even a cardboard box with lots of ventilation? Put her in it and put her in a dark place so she can be quiet and unstimulated. You're doing everything right with keeping her warm and hydrated. Lewis Posted June 1, 2010 Share Posted June 1, 2010 A dark box in a warm, quiet place would be good. A bit of blood can look quite bad - is (s)he still bleeding? You'll need to stop that if it is. Apply wound powder or, if you don't have that, search the forum as I vaguely recall some people using cornflour but could be wrong Any news? Fingers crossed here. If you are certain that her injuries are survivable, ie, no major gashes into the abdomen or chest, I would carry on, but if it looks hopeless, it might be kinder to cull her. Kids on Half term Husband in USA and once over the initial shock all the kids want to know is why there is a delay in their planned swimming We have been to the vets not our usual chicken one as they were fully booked and am in fact still waiting for the call, but decided a vet was better than no vet ! I explained I wanted to give it a chance so we are on anti biotics have been given a pain relief injection dusted with some wound powder and I have rapidly learnt to tube feed a chicken some rehydration liquid and.......... this afternoon she is a bit perkier and has eaten a little growers pellets soaked in water and gobbled up two meal worms I hand fed her The vet said it would be crucial over the next 24-48 hours but I must admit am feeling hopeful My only question is i managed to pick up some "Thomas Pettifer veterinary wound powder" from my local supplier does anyone know if it would be ok to use it doesn't say if it is ok for chickens or not, just says external animal use only contains "Comfrey (knitbone) and 2% organically combined Chlorine compound " Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She was so bad yesterday hardly breathing head all floppy I really am so relieved. She wolfed down her antibiotic tablet and is standing up I have the number of the manufacturer of the wound powder sowill ring them today before using it her wounds do look niceand dry ! She is in a smallish indoor rabbit run thing about 3ft x 2ft and now she feels alittle better is not impressed. I did let her out for 10 mins onto the grass for a peck, she didn't leave my side bless her. I can not believe the improvement she must have some strong genes ! But now don't know what to do I can't keep her in the little run for much longer but not sure I can put her back in with her two Pekin Bantam friends as although they had only been together for a week and after some initial bossyness from the pekins had settled nicely and were really getting on dustbathing togeher etc, but am worried they may peck her knowing she is weak I did put her on the floor in the garden with the Pekins and they were running round and round the cage and all chirping at each other but not sure if it is ok to re introduce> Do chickens recognise each other !!!!!!!!!! Have redesigned the barrier to the Hybrid girls so there is NO WAY anyone can get through to them now ! Thanks to everyone, all your comments and advice has been a god send, being a fairly new chicken keeper well for a year, but with no major hiccups till now it has been a life line.
