mother hen
Babs, our Miss Pepperpot, does not appeared to have layed an egg for 6 or 7 months. At first I thought it was due to the extremely cold winter and that she would pick up again once we got to spring/summer. But despite some nice warm weather still no eggs. Today I noticed that she was spending a lot of time in the nest box just standing up. So, having reviewed the FAQs on the forum I thought I'd tried a warm bath so see if that would help her. All she did was poo on me and throw up all over me several times. The vomit is brown as if it's just layer pellets. Now she's just stood up outside the coop, not moving but closing her eyes from time to time. She even ignored the small handful of corn I threw in front of her. I should also mention that the back section of her comb is flopping to one side. Any ideas what's wrong with her ? Have I stressed her out ? Is it time for the vet ? Any advice much appreciated. Chucky Mama
Have a look to see if it matches the symptoms of Sour Crop here:[Click]
Christian
I would say sour crop too. I would get her to a vet asap if you don't feel able to treat her yourself. If caught early, she should be fine. Hope she is better soon..
mother hen
Just to give you and update on Babs. We took her to our local vet's last night. He noted her swollen abdomen and suggested a course of antibiotics but admitted he was 'stabbing in the dark' due to his lack of experience with chickens. He also gave us the option of a referal to an exotic animal specialist, who would be better placed to do proper diagnostics. This is the option we took. Put in simple terms, the specialist believes she most likely had a bit of a shock or fright of some sort and instead of the egg passing through the correct route it has ended up going the wrong way and this has resulted in an infected abdomen. She's on Baytril & Metacam, (antibiotic & anti-inflamatory) but as she was still vomiting a little this moring, she's probably not keeping all her meds down. The good news is that with the medication the recovery rate is 80-90%, the bad news is that she's got more of an infection than most so the medication may not clear up the infection. We're still keeping our fingers crossed for her. As my OH says, "she's not just a chicken, she's part of our family", so we'll continue to do our best for her and keep praying for a full recovery.
