squidsin
Nugget has been diagnosed with a respiratory infection and is on antibiotics in solitary for the next few days (in a rabbit hutch kindly lent to me by scarletohara of this parish - I love this forum!) The vet checked Nugget over and said - apart from the infection - she couldn't find anything else wrong other than she's a bit thin (I am hoping to fatten her this week), but I noticed earlier that she's got gunk round the base of her feathers. It looks like dried poo but it can't be can it? Anyone know what it is? Should I try and wash it out? She does niff a bit! It looks pretty welded on though... I'm a bit worried about her being on her own tonight too. Poor Nugget!
jennydavies
Do you dust them with Diatom or red mite powder ? If you don't I would give that a go. did the vet check her for Mites/Lice ? Mites can make them very poorly and anaemic. I am sure someone more experienced will be along soon.
squidsin
I asked the vet to check her for parasites and she didn't say anything about lice or mites. I couldn't see anything moving at the base of her feathers. I doused them all with red mite powder last month. I've just got some diatomous earth so will dust her with that tomorrow - although won't it make the respiratory infection worse? Argh! jennydavies
What did the "gunk" look like - was it like dry cement powder ? or was it more "wet" - she hadn't been in a muddy dust bath had she ?
squidsin
What did the "gunk" look like - was it like dry cement powder ? or was it more "wet" - she hadn't been in a muddy dust bath had she ? It was dry - it was just like dried gunk round the base of her feathers. You can only see it if you pull her wings aside for a look. But yeah it could be dried on mud! She's always got a grubby bum too - I have to wash it at least once a week. She's a skanky little chook, bless her. She does this thing, too, which looks like she's doing a sad yawn. What on earth is that about?
Plum
She could have canker, fungal infection right through digestive tract easily treated with nystatin etc., If you look down her mouth you may be able to see plaques and then white discharge in nether regions and possibly white ulcers. If it's lice they lay their eggs at base of feathers and it looks like dried cement you can google some pictures. I've got one I suspect may be infected, she's been on antibiotics and is still wet white and crusty on the bum. We're back to vet soon and I think some samples will go to lab to confirm. squidsin
I'll delouse her tomorrow anyway - poor thing, she's been manhandled all day, including a very thorough vent inspection at the vet's and is now in solitary! Are there any pix on here of canker and what to look for? Thanks for the advice so far btw Plum and Jenny.
Plum
Sorry can't find any guess it would be like a mouth ulcer with white coating
Plum
Please ignore my previous comment about canker it's a trichomonas infection not fungal and treated differently. How is she?
