Do not read before breakfast

Recommended Posts

Ughh - just had an awful experience. I am 3 days into a 7 day worming treatment and one of my chooks just did a poo with what could what only be described as a 6 inch long piece of white cooked spaghetti in it (not sure what worm this could be). It wasn't moving at all. Chook number 2 runs over pulls it out of poo and eats it  Despite my protestations she gobbled it up.

Questions

1) what sort of worm could this be?

2) Is this normal for chooks to eat worms out of others poo?

3) do you think chook 1 expelled it due to worming treatment?

4) will this cycle re-infect chook 2 who ate it?

Feeling queezy now :(

:vom: thanks everyone for reassurances - still feeling yuk, but just hoping the worming works! Had them 12 weeks and they were supposed to be 16 weeks when I got them and not had an egg yet, so maybe this is why. Breeder assured me they had been wormed and I did give them VermX about 8 weeks ago.

What are you worming them with now? VermX is more for prevention - my vet told me to use Flubenvet for an effective cure and it worked :vom::vom:

Yours must be doing something though, to have had Spaghetti Junction in the poo tray!

I am using Flubenvet this time, though to be honest a local chicken lady gave me it in a bag and just said divide the amount into seven days so it was a bit hit and miss. The first 2 days (Fri and Sat) I made a porridge (made with layers pellets and porridge oats and warm water) and added it and they wolfed it down - today I have added all of the remainder to the eglu feeder with enough pellets for 5 days for both of them. After reading more on here I think I will go and add some vegetable oil and make sure the pellets are well coated as am now worried it will just of made its way to the bottom of the feeder and they will not gett the full dose. These chooks worry me more than my kids! :?

You shouldn't be able to get Eprinex for poultry unless a vet writes a prescription for you. Anyone else giving it out will be doing so illegally I am afraid. If your chicken expelled the worm following a Flubenvet worming regime all should be well. Had you been using Verm-x until this dose of Flubenvet?

I last used VermX for 3 days commencing 18th April (purely as a precautionary as I don't think they had worms then). I was prompted to use the Flubenvet as I thought I saw something wriggling in a poo on Thursday last week. Following the discovery this morning - seems I was right. Still freaked out about no 2 chook eating it though :(

Am worrying now that they are not eating enough pellets to get the required amount of Flubenvet down them. Also worried that I am going to have to move the run to move them away from the infested area to ensure that they do not reinfest themselves :(
