Bees under shed

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have quite a few bees nesting under my shed. There are always about 10 or so buzzing in and out. They are bumble bee type with a white bum, quite small. I have no issue with them apart from the shed is right by the back door and near the kids toys etc. They don't seem to interested in us but just concerned that they could be a problem. I have explained to the children that they are to keep away from them and not to antagonise.

Rang the council and they said to contact a local bee keeper, is that worth a go? Bearing in mind they aren't honey bees

Thanks

Hi

I think bees are a protected species and there are rules about disturbing their nests. We had the same problem a good few years ago and we had to leave the nest alone. I think they move to a new nest area each year when they follow the new queen bee. That could however be totally wrong! It is worth contacting a bee keeper for advice. Bees are not easily antagonised though and should only sting as a last resort.

If they are bumble bees then unless they've nested in a discrete place, e.g. in a bird-box, it's very difficult to remove the nest, so a local bee keeper isn't likely to be able to help.

They are VERY unlikely to sting, and the best thing is probably to leave them in place - it's only for the summer, they will be gone in a few months - possibly even sooner - and they are unlikely to return, as stated above. Provided your children don't actually tread on one, they should be ok.

There's a leaflet here on the BBKA website about bees that you might find in your garden, which might be of interest.
