Our first chicken death, RIP Margot

Recommended Posts

We had our first chicken death on Monday evening. :( Margot was my favourite chicken and was always the first to come to the fence when you went to their pen. She was also the most "chatty" and one of our original omlet girls. She was the only one I could pick up easily too. Not sure why she died really. a slow decline over a couple of weeks and I think the heat at the weekend finished her off, she wasn't eating or drinking and despite my best efforts to get some substance into her I thought it was best to put her out of her misery in the end so a friend and very experienced chicken keeper came and did the deed for me. She is now buried (deep!) in the garden. She was 2 1/2 so not that old I would have thought.

I thought I would have been braver than I was and I miss her alot more than I thought too. It seems quiet without her.

Hi, sorry to hear of your loss, (Cherry our first hen to die) went to heaven last Thursday and i empathize with you fully...you dont realise until their gone how much you miss them. I miss cherry everyday, she was too one of my favourites. Its still gets me now even though i dont have any tears left to cry. We have planted a cherry tree in her memory, could you do anything similar? We have chosen one that grows big red heart shaped Cherries, every year they flower and fruit i will think of my Cherry baby, hope you are bearing up ok xxx

Thank you for all your kind messages. We are hoping to plant something over the spot where she is buried in a few weeks time. Maybe an apple tree or something pretty anyway. The others are adjusting to life without Margot (she was top chick!) and I have totally cleaned out their run and put loads of new woodchips down too so they seem happy!

Incidently, my other two original Omlet girls haven't laid for weeks. Is it the heat or are they reaching the end of their lifespan too :?: Both seem well and happy.

It is never nice when Chickens die...we've had chicks for about 8years...our 1st lot went to rats, 2nd lot went to foxes, and our most recent lot (on the weekend) went to stoats!!! Seriously not liking nature at the minute...but at the end of the day, you have to remember...they are animals...and they dont live as long as us humans. at least she sounded like she went naturally and peacefully...thats all you can really ask for.

Chin up chick!

So sorry about Margot. Planting something is a lovely idea, we have a memorial garden (v small) for our first two cats, but my DH refused to dig a hole when Mabel died (he said that we would eventually have too many holes and besides the ground was too hard) so she went to the great rubbish tip in the sky unfortunately.
