kissinuk
I've read the really good advice on here with regards to introducing new birds, however are there any special things I should consider when I only have one existing chicken? I'm considering introducing either 1 or 2 new birds since one of our Gingernut's died a few months back (RIP Honey), however our remaining girl seems to be coping very well on her own in her . Would it be best to introduce one or two new chickens at a time? If so would the advice for introducing new birds to an existing flock still apply or should I do anything different? Typically I have just given our old rabbit hutch away so may need to make some kind of temporary house in the shed. I could of course just let Marmalade carry on living by herself, it certainly doesn't seem to bother her! Patricia W
I'll bump this up for you. The answer is to take it slowly and have some separate accommodation. Lots of people have had this problem with a lone chicken so I'm sure someone will be along soon Tricia
Guest
It isn't best introducing 1 hen. She will just be alone all the time and get picked on. 2 is good so they share the pecking but are close with each other that they wont get lonely. You will need temporary housing for a week then you can put the new girls in with the old girl at night and remove them early in the morning. This means getting up before the chickens. And doing that for about 2 weeks then letting them free range together for a week and then seeing how they do together in the day in the run. But you might find the old girl bonds because they are company.
