Eglu for Lionheads

Recommended Posts

Hello Rabbit lovers!

I'm about to purchase 2 lionheads for the kids, We love the eglu Cube for the hens so much that we want to continue the trend and buy for the rabbits, but is it going to be large enough to accommodate them does anybody know???

Lionheads are quite small aren't they? I don't know how big/small the cube is but my two English lops (not small but medium sized buns) live very comfortably in their eglu with run (although most of the time they are free-roaming). The eglu (as I'm sure the cube is) is REALLY easy to keep clean.

Thanks for that reasurance! I really like the safeness of the Eglu's and you're right the cleaning is such a breeze. I just know that if I bought a regular hutch (which although much bigger) Im going to be disappointed later.

Thanks guys, currently they are no bigger than my hand "CUTE" and until our Eglu arrives tomorrow! YES tomorrow they are living in a cat basket... peppa managed to escape last night left George... sitting there to groom himself for a change!!! (yes my 3 year old has named them!) so now nicely secured with cake wire rack attached to door as well. It's amazing the things you have to invent to stop the cats/ kids / hens getting each other! I'll send along photo's as soon as things calm down.

Hi Scotty

Yes, we had our 2 lionheads in an eglu, they had plenty of room and it gave the female plenty of chances to bit her brother's bottom! Sadly both now deceased - one killed off by cold a year and a half ago, other taken by fox just last month when I put her in a flimsy run on the grass whilst eglu being cleaned (hence now for sale!)

Oh that is so sad :( sorry to hear that... the biting of the bottom, is that quite a common thing? I've noticed that the boy rabbit also has what Im assuming bite marks on his bottom (all very saucy I imagine) as she spends the rest of the time cleaning him!

Hi

Just read your post, we have two rabbits, a lionhead-english cross and a mini lop. We bought them one of those square chicken coops instead of a conventional rabbit hutch as we felt the height was important for them to stand up and they looked lovely (same as link below).

We bought that in Feb 09. Since then we have been repairing it over and over again from where they have chewed the wood for the ramp, chewed the side of the nesting box (and created a hole!) chewed the dividers in the front door and the list goes on. They escaped from it 3 times in the night as the catches for the door were so poor so we also replaced them. We also noticed recently that the roofing material is leaking and has bubbled up, needless to say we are very disappointed with it!

We finally decided to bite the bullet and bought a second-hand rabbit Eglu and run off eBay for £200, we have only had it for a week and I am honestly never ever looking back! They don't chew it, they have so much more space to jump and run around, it is so easy to clean out and move, the hay rack is excellent for ensuring they have their daily hay (they always used to pull their hay rack off the wire before - I assume boredom from being in a smaller area) and most of all it looks brilliant in our garden and doesn't weather. Also the resale value of it is brilliant so I honestly think it's actually cheaper in the long run - the woman I bought it off had it 6 years (looks brand new still) and she paid around £320 for it new (couldn't remember exactly!) and sold for £200. I work that out at £120 for rabbit accommodation over 6 years. We've had our wooden hutch for just over a year, paid £130 for it and it is virtually worthless now, it scares me to think how many hutches you can go through in a rabbit's lifetime!

All in all, i've been totally converted to an Eglu lover and will never be housing my small furries in anything else ever again!

You made an excellent decision and I can only say I wish i'd seen the benefits of the Eglu when we first got our buns.

Oh goodness, the cheeky bunnies! - Yes we are pleased with ours also! We did have Mr Fox visit one evening and although he couldn't reach the rabbits he did managed to chew through the Wind/Sun shade  But you are right they look like modern art in the garden don't they!

I've got to say that the eglu is fine for them, George I think is a cross lionhead... not cross angry :x but more like a dwarf /lionhead... Peppa has grown and grown I'd say twice the size of George but still they are nice and snug, Even after the fox attack I've continued to leave the hutch door open so they can jump in and out into the run, they are more wary now of Mr Fox  and of course with the fox watch, Lion Poo and every other gadget on the market to fend off the foxes I think we're good! Its lovely to see Peppa and George cuddle up and groom each other - like an old married couple!
