Urgent advice needed please

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to hatch some pekin's and frizzles under my broody frizzle. I have just gone out to check on them as it is day 20 to find that the first chick thats hatched is just outside the eglu door, has it been thrown out by broody hen? Its still alive, just put it in a egg box lid. It is moving around a bit and cheeping. Is it possible to put back in with the hen or will she reject again? This is the first time I've tried to hatch anything.

Any advice or information on this would be greatly appreciated,

thanks

My broody did a similar thing last week

it seems quite common for this to happen with an inexperienced broody but once the chick is drier and fluffier it can normally be placed back under the broody with no problems

I'd give it a gentle dry with a hairdryer and try it back with the broody

Close the door to the Eglu so its darker and she will be less likely to reject it I believe

Thanks Redwing. I've now put the chick back after ensuring that she was dry and closed the eglu door, hopefully she will accept it this time. Do you think this will happen again as subsequent chicks hatch?

Drusilla, my blue Orpie, kicked her first Marans baby out from under her, I tucked the little one into my tshirt & after about an hour it was chirping and fluffy so I tucked it back under Dopey-drawers skirts & there it stayed thankfully... 3 more hatched happily & she's been a great mum to them ever since :D Unfortunately we lost the other 2, possibly trampled as they hatched

Blossom my Pekin accepted all her chicks from the word go & they are nearly as big as her now, so you never can tell from one broody to another :anxious: and they were both first-timers.

Good luck with the rest of the hatch

Thanks again for the advice. I've had a peep this morning and the chick, that was thrown out of the nest yesterday, appears to be doing well and has been joined by another one :D There are another five eggs left in the nest and at least one has pipped and hopefully more but didn't like to look for too long.

Ahhh it's often a bit of a surprise to the broody when her first ever chick hatches. They sometimes squash or even eat their first chicks, or simply reject them out of the nest. They are much better with the following chicks, as they know what to expect then. I'm sure all will be fine now.
