Gertie
Hello everyone I wonder if anyone has any experience of this, or knows why it happens or how to stop or prevent it? I recently noticed blood on one or two eggs over a few days ( I didn't realise it was blood to start with). After the second time I checked my hen& noticed her vent had blood on it. I cleaned her up & discovered the blood was coming from inside her. I took her to the vet & was told that she had something stuck to her cloaca. He gave me anti iotics & told me it should pass in a week. Does anyone else have experience of what can cause this? Many thanks Erika
Egghead68
Hi Erika, I can't answer your question but I do know that you need to be very careful that your other chickens do not peck at the blood on her vent (they are attracted to red and can do a lot of damage). Can you get hold of some gentian violet to spray her vent with and disguise the colour? I hope your hen doing OK now.
Egluntyne
It sometimes happens when there is a small internal tear when the egg is laid.
Gertie
Thanks for replying. I did some research as soon as I saw what was wrong and all the articles said to do exactly that! She is doing fine (I think!). She is isolated in the guest room - newspaper all over the floor! I did put her outside in a separate pen but the flies laid eggs on her. I picked them all off (thankfully I went to clean her again & noticed them- that happened even though I sprayed her purple). I read an article that said trim the feathers around her vent as they were collecting th poop! Since the vet cleaned out her cloaca she can poo better so she is clean. As she is in the house, no more flies either! She is eating, drinking, clucking & pooing. Her tail has gone back up again too. She has 3 days of antibiotics left& after that I'm going to put her back outside again!
