Soiled Vent

Recommended Posts

My Rhode Island Red has a very soiled vent, and has been pulling her own dirty feathers out, to the point of ebing nearly bald underneath now. She looks very sleepy as well. When I pick her up she looks like she's got bits of poo all over her. Her sisters are all fine and they are all kept in the same cleaned, hen house. Any ideas what's up with her and what I can do to cure her? My vet is useless and has no idea about poultry. I was going to bath her in some warm water tonight and try and have a go at cleaning her myself?

Thanks

Has she been wormed?

Just been out to see to my chickens, and I noticed that one of my White Stars, who is normally dazzlingly clean, had a very mucky bottom, which she didn't have yesterday. Close inspection revealed that she has a prolapse. Darn it.

I'd grab your girl and give her a thorough **Basic Health Check** and see if there is anything obvious amiss.

Are her droppings ok and has she laid. Any signs of anything abnormal there?

I was thinking she needs a collar like you put on dogs to stop them pulling at stitches  There must be an underlying reason so I guess next thing would be to ask vet to send a droppings sample to lab or send one yourself to Retfords :? Have you wormed her with Flubenvet or similar?

Thanks for the comments. Yes she has been wormed recently, no she's not laying, but I've only had her a month and I don't think she's layed at all since we've had her..It's hard to tell, I have 3 that live together who should all be laying, but I get one egg a day, and am never sure who it's from!

I think she has vent gleet, based on other feedback from forums, as such I have given her yoghurt mixed with mash and am putting yoghurt on her backside. Hopefully this may help, but I think you're right, a collar sounds like a good idea!!
