Oh no, I thought things were looking up for her

The nutri drops didn't really help. She's had her meds again and we've been giving her pro-biotic yoghurt and maggots. She's managed to keep it down so we've put her to bed and hopefully it will all be able to work its magic overnight. Fingers crossed for the morning :pray:

Tutti just caught up with this thread, I am sorry she is having a real roller coaster ride. I really hope it resolves. Poor little thing.

I know, thanks Plum, like all our girls, she is such a sweetie. She's the one who sat on my lap on the day we rescued her. Oh I'm so sad, I hope she's better in the morning {chokes back tears} otherwise I'll have to do the kind thing, much as I love her to bits... I feel so inadequate, don't know what else we can do. Nor if me missed any early signs, if we've caused it by letting her eat leaves, could we have got her to the vets earlier? SHe looked fine on Weds

 

ETA just checked on her again, she's moved herself into the Cube nestbox and is sleeping. Her wings are drooped but I think that's normal? Fingers crossed for the morning but I just don't know what to expect.

 

We **KNEW** when we rescued them that it could be short term but these little ladies have really captured my heart and I don't think I could ever be prepared to lose one. I know I've given her 8 months of fun and love, which she's given back to us ten fold as well... but I just wish it could be longer

Oh i am so sorry about Ursula, i have only just caught up with this, ive been away, but i do know exactly how you are feeling. Its heartbreaking to see them like this. I have everything crossed for her and hope and pray for some good news in the morning.

Chin up hun, we all know how much you love and care for her and she couldnt be in better hands then her loving chicken mummy.

I am just posting this since I have had a chicken with sour crop and have come through the other side. As I understand the sour crop can be caused by both bacteria and fungal infections and therefore the vet reccomended using both Nystan (antifungal) and an antibiotic. It took several days but she is now eating again (she was really thin) and is back at the top of the pecking order. It might be worth you trying adding in an antifungal to the treatment options (you can start this today by using Daktarin oral gel from the chemist) although the Nystan really worked in my case.

 

Also for the drain/not to drain, I was horrified to read all the reports of accidently killed chickens and was really reluctant. The anifungal will work well in the glup without draining (as it does not get absorbed) and works directly on the nasty gloop. But the antibiotic does have to be absorbed so the less gloop in there the better. I took it really slowly (and emptied in very small short bursts). I felt very sorry for my chicken - but she did peak up after the crop was emptied each day and the antibiotics administered. I think it took 5 or so days for a real effect to be shown.

Ursula seemed perkier today but started to doze heavily at about 1:30 and then passed away in my hands peacefully at 1:45
