Aunty e
We have a huge garage (which has seen the car for precisely ONE night) in which I keep a lot of bits and pieces, camping equipment, tools, gardening equipment, furniture, that sort of thing. It's essentially dry, so ideal for storage, except that EVERYTHING is covered in cobwebs after about five minutes because of the huge spiders everywhere. Is there anything at all I can do to cut down the number of spiders? OH and I had a thrilling conversation in bed last night where we tried to work out what a spider's natural predator was and then realised that our cats were probably slaughtering all the birds and mice that might have thinned out the numbers. It's such a romantic life. Any ideas? OH and I are both pathetic about spiders and the cats are not being helpful when asked to deal with them. Our only other option is to wait for Imogen to get a bit bigger and hope she is braver than either of her parents when it comes to arachnids. WarrensWorld
You could always shoot the cats, and save the birds...........
bluekarin
I hate spiders too, but I wouldn't try and get rid of them. When I go up the garden to the chickens/compost bin etc I take a bamboo cane with me and swish it about to break the webs that are in my path. Maybe try that for when you have to go in your garage. Aunty e
The cats seem to have killed all the stupid birds this year, only the clever ones remain. And they ain't going in the garage. Told you they were clever. The other day I spotted Minnie dragging a wood pigeon that was at least as big as she was. Sigh. I have noticed the mornings are a lot quieter now
patsylabrador
We have loads of the thin bouncy spiders with ugly webs. They come in the house too. I let them stay while they're small because they're great predators, but once they get too big and obvious I get someone to throw them in the garden. I have to Hoover up cobwebs every day because they make them so quickly. Big curtains of grot, not beautiful webs. I hate spiders but try to tolerate them. I used to have a cat that would bring in wolf spiders to play with.
Chickendoodle
I have heard (but never tried it so can't guarantee it will work) that if you scatter conkers around the perimeter of a room it discourages spiders and daddy long legs. Can't do any harm so worth a try - just have to find a handy horse chestnut tree somewhere!
Chucky Mama
The other day I spotted Minnie dragging a wood pigeon that was at least as big as she was. Sigh. I have noticed the mornings are a lot quieter now I've got plenty of wood pigeons here if you want to send her over.

sadietoo
I was going to say my MIL used to have conkers in the corners of the room and thought these kept the critters out. Personally I leave them alone, (although I do get rid of the huge and nasty webs in the house I hasten to add), I like the idea that they keep down flies..which I absolutely hate, but I'm really not bothered at all by them (although over a certain size, even I use an implement to pick them up rather than just my hands )
Olly
I've heard the conker thing, but don't know if it's true. Could you send the chickens in to clean up a few areas? I used to be really scared of spiders, but I've learned to tolerate them after living in a house which had the biggest and most prolific spiders I have ever seen. Generally they scuttle out of the way, but that's a bit scary in itself. I've just had a major garage tidy-up, and everything was cobwebbed, and when it's mixed with chainsaw dust it makes a rather nasty sticky sort of fabric! I suspect that if you moved things around in there and did a bit of sweeping, you might persuade some of them to move on. Just whistle loudly and march forward with the broom in front of you! Valkyrie
I like spiders! Can I borrow your cat because we are inundated with ruddy pigeons? Ooh, we could do swapsies. Always remember "if you want to live and thrive, let a spider run alive". They are also doing a great job in getting rid of unpleasant insecty thingies. Unfortunately they make webs. Ah well, "Ooops, word censored!"ody's perfect.
Aunty e
You're all welcome to borrow Minnie the menace to deal with woodpigeons. We have not been bothered for a week or so, although she does now steer clear of magpies following the baby magpie, me with a broom, parent magpie divebombing Minnie and much shrieking incident. She's very friendly and helpful I might take the pekins into the garage with me to help clear them out - it's partly my fault, because I haven't moved stuff to its final position since we moved in, and so everything is piled up, not stacked on the racks. Will also try conkers...
