bridgy chooks
Maggi is making a bit of a rasping noise (not constant, just some of the time) so sounds like she poss might have a problem and I am worried. There isn't any discharge from her nose at all - I remember when she had rattly breathing when she was little coupled with discharge from her nose which was treated with antibiotics, but this is a different noise which I've noticed when I pick her up. She has no other problems and is acting normally - laying eggs, dustbathing etc. I am wondering if it could be some kind of heart defect as she's quite old now. Any thoughts as to what could be wrong with her (if anything)?
Plum
Could it be a foreign body?

Plum
Just thinking back to where someone else posted something similar and it cleared. Sorry can't remember any more detail.
bridgy chooks
No worries Plum, thanks for replying. I might give her a bit of oil in her porridge in case there is a bit of a blockage. I really don't want to have to take her to the vet if she doesn't need to go but at the same time don't want her to suffer if you get what I mean. Fingers crossed she'll improve on her own but if she goes off colour I'll have to have a re=think.
Plum
Have you tried putting your ear to her back to listen to her? Hope it goes
bridgy chooks
She's now sneezing.... quite a lot but she has laid today and is strutting around the garden as usual. Can chickens get over these sorts of things with out any treatment or should I take her to the vet asap?
Plum
Depends on the cause it is often a virus such as with Infectious Bronchitis but there can be a secondary bacterial infection. I would watch out to see if the mucous becomes cloudy which would indicate they need antibiotics. If you don't want the vet then maybe try Herban which is a oregano based tonic which makes claims of being of use in mycoplasma, infectious bronchitis etc., http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/chickenhouses/Herban_Liquid.html I've not tried it but others on forum recommend it. chelsea
Any wheezing or rasping should be seen by a vet asap. It could be a respiratory infection that requires antibiotics. Best to nip these things in the bud as they can be very nasty once they take hold.
bridgy chooks
Thanks guys. Vet has prescribed baytril today so have started the treatment... vet thinks she'll be ok as just a cold but antibiotics to make sure it doesn't turn into something nasty or isn't a respiratory infection. Fingers crossed she'll improve. She is absolutely fine in herself so hopefully she'll be ok.
