I knew I bought two bales the other week for a reason. Not just because it's a faff to detour to the horsey place that sells it in Kendal.

As an aside, I bought a bale of hemcore a couple of months ago as the place where I usually buy my chicken bits from had some in stock. I was really disappointed with it - it was dusty and with lots of fibrous bits in it which tangled around the legs and feet of my chicks. I won't bother with it again.

I've never been able to get any Aubiose (since I got my eglu about a month ago), this might well be why? Anyway, I was using sawdust, but my local "horsey place" suggested Rapasorb instead. It's chopped rape straw. Have to say, I'm really pleased with it (I was worried 'cos it's only £7 a bag, fair bit cheaper than Aubiose, I believe), the poo in the tray etc just seems to disappear into it and the eglu smells much fresher since I started to use it. All of this said, having never had any Aubiose, I only have sawdust to compare it with !

Yes, we've had supply issues with Aubiose and Hemcore, so I've moved over to Bliss which is chopped rape straw - excellent stuff, cheaper than the other two and comes in two fragrances - Menthol and Citronella. Very pleased with it so far. It is harsher than Aubiose but my chickens love chucking it about in the WIR.
