bennett
This year all my chooks seem to be ill or dieing I lost one to mycro 4 weeks ago, so all my chooks had tylan. Now today i find my japanese bantam sat in a lot of runny poo and not looking bright at all. I blanket treated all my chooks not so long ago with coxoid as i was treating my first chick hatch. So i GIVE UP . Either i am doing something totally wrong or i am having the worst luck ever. I feel like culling the lot (not that i would actually do this) and starting again. What am i doing so wring this year???????????????????????????

Olly
Sorry to hear that. I don't think you are doing anything wrong - sometimes it just happens like that. Hopefully better times are ahead.
Ms Marple
Poor you. It can be very traumatic I know too well. I do wonder if the weather is more significant this year - warm and very damp- slight exaggeration there but good microbial growth conditions. madchickenlady
I lost three hens in my first yeasr of chicken keeping, and felt exactly the way you do. It's so demoralising. I went through my husbandry with a fine toothed comb, because I was convinced I was doing something wrong. In the end, though, I wasn't. Some hens are just weaker than others, and sometimes you just have bad luck My first girl went off her legs,a nd we never really got to the bottom of why, and I had to have her PTS. My second girl just dropped dead in the run in the middle of her breakfast . The third, my beloved Mini, eventually died under anaesthetic for having her eye removed (she was always poorly, constantly had an infection, and had many trips to the vet. She was also my favourite ) It's heartbreaking to get such a bad run of luck, but in the end your love of chicken keeping will rally you, and you'll persevere
majuka
So sorry you are having a tough time of late. I think sometimes it just happens like that though and it is just a run of bad luck. We got our first four ex-batts in August 2008 and went nearly a year before having Veronica pts because of peritonitis on 11 July 2009. In August 2009 we took four more ex-batts. On 31 March 2010 we had Clarissa pts due to a tumour and the following night her best friend Henrietta died in her sleep. We were devastated to loose two so close together. Matilda developed a heart murmour and was pts on 26 July 2010 and one of our 2009 ex batts, Martha, was pts this Monday due to a tumour. It has been a terrible year for us and we have questioned so many times whether we want more. I know that we will though because the good times far outweigh the bad. It is tough though when they all go so close together.x
hippy chick
Oh what terrible luck I had hens for about 10 years and hardly ever had a problem. Then I had a break for about 5 years and decied to get some more last year but now they seem to be dropping like flies i hope that your luck changes for the better (and mine too ) Jilly xx
