Mr Rhode Island Red
Mr Rhode Island Red here. One of my darling rhode Island Red hybrids Penny has scower. I started to realise yesterday evening, that penny just wasn't herself. I asked the rest of the family if they thought she looked sick. However they all said she looked as healthy as a trout, shows how much they knew. This morning she was shoved out of the shed by her fellow flock. She then walked over to the water dispenser drank a good bit of water, very slowly. Thats when I realised a white line of scower about 1cm in width running vertically down her bum. She has just sat at the water dispenser for the past 2 hours. There is a retired vet who specialises in small animals that lives locally, who should be able to supply me with an antibiotic. But until then can anybody give me advice as to what to do as I have already lost two of my birds to scower. All advice welcome Thanks. meezers
Have they been wormed ? If not I use some flubenvet ? that's all I can suggest. Bokashi bran will 'firm things up' but treat the cause.
Mr Rhode Island Red
Thanks, I got the birds from a reliable source recommended to me by a friend so I'd presume they're vaccinated
Mr Rhode Island Red
***UPDATE*** I've checked on penny, she was sitting on the floor of the shed with an egg twice penny's usual size underneath her, the shell was very tough on it. No harm done. A lot of the scower has cleared up. Shes sleeping it out now.

Mr Rhode Island Red
Scower is a word used for describing a runny, liquidy, white poo that makes the hen sore. It sticks to their bum which also irritates the hen. The scower penny got was mild compared to what my deceased darlings, Daffodil and Sweetie got. Egluntyne
Never heard the word scower before. A white line of poo under a chickens vent can often just be caused by the urates part of the poo clinging to the feathers. From the sound of it all is well now. Scouring is a natural flushing process which occurs when the normal digestive processes in the lower gut of an animal are disturbed.
