holz
Hi All, I have searched the internet and the forum, and cant find an answer to my question, so am hoping you lovely chook enthusiasts will be able to assist! I have read that the anti pecking spray is quite nasty stuff (I guess it has to be to work!). My Silkie, Marge (as in Mrs Simpson) is being pecked around her neck by one of the other little darlings! She has not drawn blood, and there are no scabbed areas, however I am reluctant to put the nesty pecking spray so close to her face.....Will it harm her to put it around her neck area? Also - if I do one of them, do I need to do them all, or only the "victim"??
Patricia W
You do the victim. Get someone to help you i.e. they hold her and expose her neck keeping her head out of the way. Make sure that if you are using Ukadex ( and I think it's the only one that really works), both of you wear gloves and old clothes. It stinks. holz
Thank you! Am going to pop to pets at home in my lunch break....Hopefully they will have the correct one. Do I just do the affected area?
Eggasperated
I had to spray the neck of one of mine regularly and found with someone else holding her it was best to put one hand across her face to prevent the spray from going in her eyes. You should only need to spray the affected area and a small bit around it, however watch out for pecking starting elsewhere on her. I also found it was necessary to repeat the spraying every few days to ensure the others kept away from it but hopefully yours will be less determined than my pecker (who eventually had to be rehomed!) holz
Fab - thank you for the advice! I'm sorry you had to re-home your pecker! I hope it doesn't come to that with ours.....She's moulting, I think it's a jealousy thing
Patricia W
You'll only get Johnson's anti-peck spray in Pets at Home. It didn't work for me so I sent off for Ukadex by mail order. Much better! I bought it from http://www.bowdenandknights.com/s3/Poultry-Health.html. You phone them up and they send it out asap, then invoice you about 2 weeks later! Excellent service. JanTheDiver
I got Netex in Pets at home, it seems to be working but you do have to keep re-applying it every 3-5 days. But put it on sparingly NOT spraying as the label says as this led to my chickens becoming sort of drunk; they recovered by the next morning with a hangover You should wear gloves and old clothes as it smells like the creosote you put on wooden fences
grb944
Yes crecsote..I knew the smell was familar !! I sparyed my 2 sussex chocks as the 2 Speclady were bullying them I now have 2 brown sussex chocks !! \the pecking spray has dyed the feathers...and not stopped the pecking ! I sprayed some in the kitched to test it..and it has stained a cream wall..it won't come off !!
