I've been thinking that when I get more hens I'd like to get some bantams. I was hoping that someone more enlightened than myself would be able to tell be the pros and cons of mixing them with . Is this possible or recommened? I also have a so don't know if they would be able to actually get into it. Also what are the best breeds to get with 2 young children?

Any thoughts welcome. Over to you more experienced omlet peeps.

I love bantams but don't mix them with my big ones. Some people do, and have been successful, especially with the feisty breeds like Pekins, but there have been tragedies. Mine are Polands and quite delicate.

I've always mixed banties with chooks, with no problem. have had 4 silkies and 1 golden sebright - she was tiny but her best friend was the Buff Orp!! they manage the cube no prob. and bantam eggs are lovely!

I don't mix mine with the big girls either.

 

One of the bantams would try to beat the big girls up and a couple of the big hens would eat the bantams for breakfast.

I originally had two warrens then got my first pekin, I think it is to do with the type of bantam maybe, but poor little lola was really getting beaten up in the garden. One of the warrens would grab her by the neck and the other would stamp on her it was really awful to watch, we tried everything from aftershave, late night introductions into the house, etc etc but it was just never going to work. We re homed the warrens to friend who had an existing flock of warrens and they settled in there no problem, although they are now the bosses of his existing flock. I now only have pekins. I hope you have better luck. Lots of people seem to make it work
