The price of hens

I have two Buffs (£30 each), two Lemon Cuckoos (£35 each) and one gold laced (£35) orpgintons, three hybrids (£15) - you can see them tonight.

I'd love a chocolate Orpington but the are rare and will be very very expensive if you can get hold of one.

The bottom is falling out of the chocolate Orp bantam market, about £50 is probably average at the moment but its coming down - when the mania was at its peak one pair sold for £1050

Large choc Orps are very rare though and a £140 price tag would not be extraordinary

My project next year is chocolate barred Wyandotte bantams :D

*barges to the front of the queue*

:D

Oi!! :shameonu:

There's a queue ;)

Babs the pekin was £5'er from the farm, think the most for pure breeds was about £20. I think our hybrids were £12, 3 years ago - got a hybrid grower from the farm a few weeks ago for £14.50.

We have the 'other' show birds too, Alice has a twisted toe, and then hatched a few again this year :D

Wylye Valley Chickens rear rare breeds and I have just bought some all 16 weeks for £25 each - amazingly good value when you see how well cared for they are, vaccinated etc.

I've had ex-batts too at 50p each!! I think chicken keeping means you go through phases, bit of Gucci one year, bit of Petticoat Lane Market the next!! And come out the other end all the more knowledgeable for the experience!
