Mother,

I bought a tree yesterday, it is big (bigger than me) and I want it to live indoors in the living room. Unfortunately there is not much light there so just wondering if it is going to live.

 

It was a bargain, I bought it for 300,000 dong including a big pot (about 12 pounds) for a whole tree! I have attached a picture (ignore my friend on the sofa), if you can identify the species then I can read how to take care of it.

 

Any ideas? Thank you

I had one of those, it came from B&Q I think. They are lovely but it lasted about 8 months before the leaves fell off and it died. Left a rather lovely twisted 'trunk' -sorry though, I don't know what it is called.

Well shall have a look out at the garden centres and read a label. He's in Vietnam so guess they don't put labels on them there

Looks like the one I rehomed. Umbrella plant I think, grows to be enormous with little or no care.

Definitely not a Money Tree - they have thick, succulent-type leaves.

 

Looks like an umbrella plant to me. I had one very similar (yellow and green) for many years. If it has a twisted stem, then that is because its more than one plant, twisted together from very young growth. There are many different sorts - some are just green.

It is indeed an Umbrella Tree (Schefflera). Keep it away from draughts and be prepared for the lower leaves to drop off. OH's cousin has green fingers and she managed to take cuttings of hers - and they all looked bushy. Mine went all leggy, tried to do cuttings, but they failed. In the end you have to chop the top off before it touches the ceiling!!!

Definitely a Pachiera, not easy to keep in this climate as it's too drafty here. They have a tendency to be delicate and die at the drop of a hat

Yep, that's what I have and I would vouch for the tendency to die too

I gave up with them after a while... two or three of them died. It was quite embarrassing as i was dating a chap who had his own company designing and planting those lush interior plant displays that you see in big companies in London; he gave me loads of plants and these ruddy Pachiras kept dying on me

I had one that lived in the conservatory in the winter and outside in summer. I forget to bring it in last year and it died - the twisted stem looks nice in the garden though I got it from Ikea.
