Apples and more apples!

Recommended Posts

i have stripped the tree in the garden given tons away and boxed some in newspaper in the shed. On the allotment is a Bramleys and I have picked more here made chutney and jam and Mrs Berties apple cake by the dozen!! What is wrong with people - no one has picked any apples on the allotment trees. There are loads of windfalls all rotting. I am awash with apples. I gave a friend a bag. She asked what she should do with them. She is a reasoable cook , I just dont think she wanted to have to chop etc. The price of fruit and veg is so high I thought a few freebies would be welcome. To make it worse OH and I are dieting so we are limited on what we can eat. We are having roast pork today with yes - apple sauce.

I love apples, they are one of my favourite things about autumn. :D

We have a few small trees, and we stayed at a cottage in North wales at the end of the holidays, which had an orchard and we were free to help ourselves to the apples. :D

We had a lovely apples pie at the weekend.

I grew up with home grown apples, so stored supermarket ones never measure up.

Gosh, our apples aren't nearly ready yet...must be that London microclimate! I store almost all ours in newspaper and find we have enough apples to keep us going until March or April. You can also chop some up and freeze them for use in future apple crumbles etc. We are currently picking and freezing blackberries ready for when the apples are ready. Looking forward to blackberry and apple crumbles when the weather is cold enough to put the Rayburn on!

I'm a bit late joining this thread, but I recently bought one of these from Lakeland...

and I can't recommend it highly enough!! It takes a few minutes to set up the first time, but once it is, it zooms through the apples.

A friend of mine gave me 2 carrier bags full of apples last week and it took about half an hour to peel and core the lot! I'm now the proud owner of 8 future apple crumble fillings in the freezer!

Spooky McChook! My friend ordered one of these over the internet and three arrived (daft moo, she clicked 3 times, but didn't notice the price at checkout  ). I picked two up from her today - one for my next door neighbour for Christmas.

I managed to prepare a tub trug of cooking apples in a fraction of the time it usually takes. Mincemeat is now done for another year!
