Blue-DiamondChick07
Are they a good chook to keep? Can they live with Pekins? Would anyone recommend them?

Cinnamon
I have 2, a hen & a cockerel & they are both completely mad. Honestly, they are. They walk into things all the time because they can't see them They are lovely & easy to pick up though,as they don't see you coming
JPalmer
Hi, I was new to hen keeping and in fact only have had mine for a month and we started off with 3 Polands. I was told by many people on other forums that I shouldn't get them that they would be too hard for a newbie. They might be right but I wouldn't trade mine in for any other breed. I adore them and my husband who was the mentality of you want WHAT as a pet??? Whatever?? He is more concerned for them now then me. He rushes home so that they can get out to roam instead of going up to his beloved computer and playing. They are so loving and adorable. One of the main reasons I wanted them was that they are smaller and would be easier to handle. Research said that they were very friendly and mine jump up on my knee and then proceed up to shoulder and head and cuddle and chirp. I recommend them totally! You do have to keep an eye on them think they can get infections of the ear etc due to the feather duster on the head but if you see any change in them take them to the vet immediately. We had ours a week and notice one was having issues and took to vet and ended up with ear infection and on AB for a week but she is all better now. I don't know if it is mine or all Polands are like this but when the one was sick the other two would chirp and nudge her so that she would get up and eat and drink. So very cute, it was like they were watching out for her. Which according to my research isn't how chickens act and if we tried to separate her all three of them would scream/chirp and get very agitated so we kept them together and watched them like a hawk in case the other two attacked the sick one, we never saw that occur it was in fact the opposite. I think the only reason she lived was due to the other two's attention to her. Strange but true! They are so affectionate, I love this breed!! Blue-DiamondChick07
Thanks for that that was very helpful. It looks like I may come home with a Poland too I'll have a look at all the girls and make my decision. I have an empty coop which is always a danger
Redwing
They are super characters and good layers (for a pure breed) Be extra vigilent for any bullying problems as Polands have a soft spot on top of their heads which can be very badly damaged by pecking I used to have Polands and I have to say I wouldnt put them in with my Pekins Winter care is important, some strains of Polands dont seem to be very hardy and all Polands should be kept dry The hairdos are prone to lice and mites so keep an eye out! Griffin
....and good layers (for a pure breed) Somebody forgot to tell Olive that! 16 months old now and still hasn't laid an egg Polands are very affectionate, they love their cuddles and they tend to stick together. Doris a bit more sociable with the other chickens but Olive doesn't even seem to realise they're there. Polands live in a little world of their own. If you're going to get a Poland I'd suggest you get two because they really do appreciate company of their own kind.
