New eggs in ** photos p.2

Recommended Posts

From our hatch earlier in the year we have a Mr Silkie who has been 'looking after' his bantie frizzle and bantie Plymouth rock girls for a few months, so thought we might try a few eggs to see what happens, so 7 bantie eggs in the inccy - they our silkie/Plymouth Rock & silkie/frizzle crosses. The idea is that little frizzle seems to be loosing feathers from the attentions of Mr Silkie and one of the girls (who has a bumper bit) chasing her. We figure if we breed a few more she might be happier in a smaller flock with any new ones we manage to breed - she certainly is happy where she is and gets worried if I put her in her own Eglu, put at the moment she looks oven ready!

3 weeks to go (though I have set inccy to stop turning, etc on day 17 (usually 18) given they are bantie eggs and not full size.

Only a little pointer, but although they are bantie eggs - I still only stop turning on day 18 still.

I once noticed a pipped bantie egg when I stopped turning once & put in the hatching mat - but it still didn't hatch until late on day 19, nearly 20. I've had banties hatch at day 22 - 23 even! Litlle devils!

Good luck & hope you get some gorgeous frizzle babies.

By 5 pm I has 100% 7/7 healthy chicks  - with the inccy still claiming 1 day to go! I have taken a photo and will upload tomorrow if I get a moment. They all have feathery (silkie daddy) legs & feet, all have daddies silkie extra toe, some have daddies black skin, others have lighter skin (like mummy Plymouth Rock), all are shades of yellow/buff (mummy = buff, daddy = greyish).

So we wait to see if they get silkie feathers or 'normal' mummy feathers as they grow up.

I also find the cat on the dinning room table with his nose up on the lid, just observing the new pets of course! (now they are out on the inncy the door is closed, with weights in front of it.

Aw glad your plymouth rock surprise came in handy. Congratulations what a hatch :D:clap::dance:

Exactly! - the chicken I never wanted has the biggest character, is the easiest to pick up and now has given us eggs for 7 lovely little chicks - with those fluffy legs & feet I am hoping some at least will have silkie feathers!

Sorry - I will add photos - I have a photo at a day old - they are now 3 1/2 weeks old, so will take another photo and add it. I might be biased but I think they look lovely and certainly look different - prehaps I have found a worthwhile new breed?!

Photos at last:

a few hours old: http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2956.jpg

At 3+ weeks (today):

The gang - some with silkie style black skin, others lighter skinned, but all yellow- buff feathers

A lighter one up close:

One of the darker buff ones:

Sadly they have been moved out to the garage today - the dust they were creating inside was too much, so not so easy for me to sit in the lounge with couple perching on my fingers every evening now.

What do you think of them? - they all have the silkie extra toe and feathered legs - not so sure about their feathers as yet.

They're cute  I love mongrels, I love seeing how they turn out, it's all a lovely surprise.

I hatched some Ebay Silkies a few weeks ago. They're not the best Silkies on earth  The black one has a single comb for a start! The gold one isn't 100% gold and has two toes fused together on one foot. The white looks ok though  Bound to be a boy
