Dizzy-Deb
Now that have the big garden composter on the go, seems only natural to add the stuff from kitchen that would normally throw in bin. Sure I have seen something suitable for sale in stores so will have a nose around when get chance. In the meantime its a plastic tub Can you put more or less anything organic out for composting ? even teabags? and what about egg shells are they ok to go in too? thanks xx
poachedegg
We put all our peelings, tea bags and egg shells - you can even put the contents of your hoover in! I have one of these from Lakeland on our worktop:
Deb Dav
We have 5 compost bins for the garden and a small kitchen bin for all the kitchen compost. This is the same as ours - http://www.harrodhorticultural.com/HarrodSite/product/Composting_Compost%20Caddy%20and%20Filters/GCO-250.htm In it goes: all veggie peelings veggie/fruit gone off egg shells tea bags spent fresh coffee granuals - not the instant stuff egg shells toilets rolls/kitchen paper rolls kichen paper once used to wipe any mess up shredded paper from shredder anything cardboard ripped up old flowers It soon fills up - we leave it by the back door. It does have a filter but can get those little white flies and their maggots - but these are essential for the breaking down process. SJChick
Hi We have a little grey plastic bin that lives in the kitchen and we fill it with all our peelings, teabags, flowers, petals etc. We tried putting egg shells in our composter but found they were the slowest thing to break down. I think we got the little bin free when we ordered the composter.
chickencam
You will need a little bin with a lid and a handle, you quite often get them with composters, if not they sell them for a few pounds in DIY stores. We put all of out kitchen peeling, coffee grounds, tea bags, kitchen paper, egg shells etc in it. I usuually line the bin with a sheet of kitchen paper and this helps to stop the contents sticking to the bottom of the bin and makes it easier to clean. With regard to egg shells it is important to crush them first, because they do take a long time to break down. I also cut tougher veg into small pieces to aid the rotting process. Give your outdoor composter a stir with a garden fork from time to time to mix layers of material and keep it aerated. our Aubiose goes in in layers with kitchen waste.
