Blue-DiamondChick07
One of my Polands hatched yesterday, and it has a lump on the back of its neck it appears to be a definate malformation, but being new to Poland hatching, not sure. Seems OK other than that. Will it be alright to live with it? Its not as visable now its fluffed up. I'm not having a great deal of luck with my Chickens currently my others are pipping now, dread to think whats gonna flop out
Egluntyne
What rotten luck. Is it a soft lump or a firm one? Can you post a picture?
Jools
Excuse my stupid question, but I've no experience with Polands either, but ........ are you sure it's a deformity as I believe their topknot actually grows from a protuberance on the skull?? If not, sorry I've no idea but good luck anyway
Blue-DiamondChick07
I thought that , but they have got the bumps on the head too Both chicks have it now, which leads me to believe it maybe normal?? I'll try for a pic...
Sue
Are they standing OK or is the head hunched forwards towards the chest. All the best Sue Dark Brown Eggs
Blue-DiamondChick07
They do look hunched towards the chest actually...
Sue
If it is really hunched forwards, rather than just couched down a little, then feel the back of the neck and towards the base of the skull, and if there is a swollen thickening you can gently massage it downwards. Sometimes if the chick has hatched pointy end down they fined it hard to raise their head, and some fluid seems to build up. If every thing seems normal and the lump is on the top of the head it might be where the crest will be - but I know nothing about this particular breed. I do breed crested ducks but they are hatched with a crest showing. Crests on these are formed because there is a small deformity in the skull and fat grows through then small fluffy feathers grow on this forming a crest or pom-pom as I think it should be called. Egluntyne
I know that crested breeds are more disposed to malformations of the head, as they have gaps in the skull, through which the brain can protrude. This was why I asked if the lump was hard or soft. It might be worth you contacting the breed club and asking for advice.
