chicken bark
A difficult one - there are so many out there. I love the look of Sebrights, Hamburghs, Wyandottes .... the list is endless. How about getting a rare breed?
mark_lowe
yes I was thinking that, just no idea which one, hmmmm
coco
How about a cram legbar or Araucana for the coloured eggs.
CallyChook
if you have the space, croad langshans are beautiful
Toots
ex batt??
mark_lowe
I was thinking of an ex batt aswell, but was thinking my others might pick on it?
Egluntyne
Generally, the BHWT etc won't allow you to rehome just the one ex-batt. They need to be given a bit of R and R and be kept apart form the more robust hens for a week or two, anyway, for quarantine purposes, and to allow them to build up their strength. chicken bark
You'd have to get more than one anyway ideally. I second Callychook Croad Langshans. If you get the black ones they have a lovely green sheen. Marsh Daisy's come in lots of colours. How about a naked neck for a completely different look? Mercedes55
My OH went to pick up 2 pure breeds that we had been waiting on for a few weeks and came back with not just the Cream Legbar and Lavender Araucana, but also a Welsummer and a Salmon Favorelle. Now I have heard of the Welsummers before but I had never heard of the Favorelle and I have to say she is the most beautiful girl. She is quite chunky but oh so friendly. Out of our 4 new girls she is the only one who runs up when she sees us and she will already let us stroke her
goodinparts
Oh you lucky thing! All of those are on my (very long) short list of longed for hens, but the faverolle is at the top! Please post some pictures soon - the next best thing to seeing our own flocks expand is watching other peoples do so! Where did your new girls come from? Sounds like a breeder who likes all the breeds I like too...
daxigirl
An Appenzeller Spitzhauben, they lay a white egg and have a spikey hairdo. Or an Araucana for the blue egg (not that I'm biased or anything about my choices).
Plum
Get a breed book and read up about their character, looks performance, size etc., then decide. Spend ages looking for what you want then just buy what you like the look of locally.
AmberSky
Another vote for the cream legbar, i have 2 both slightly different colouring, and bluebelle lays pale blue eggs and lagoon lays olive green eggs though as pure'er breeds they have stopped laying now for the winter. They have unique characters though so different from my other birds, they hate the cold and rain and even hide in the coop sometimes to escape it and have what looks like a toupee on their heads also they walk around with a superior air, quite extraordinary. Trougher
I've got ex-batts, but if I was going to get a pure breed it would be a Sablepoot (I think that's the right name). I met a lady with hundreds of chickens of differing breeds, amongst which were Sablepoots - they are small and incredibly affectionate. They constantly wanted to sit on her knee, and were just the cutest things.

We got our pure breeds from Minimeadows in Northants, they are listed on the breeder list on this forum, which is why we picked them as obviously other people on here have had girls from them and been happy with them. mark_lowe
love that run! is it ok to have concrete on the floor and a large section of wood chippings? this is my run..... (the small house as gone now, it was only to add some new chickens)
migsy
Mark - How about putting Hemcore on the floor? It is very absorbent and light so easy to clean out/replace. It costs about £10 per bale and you would probably only use about 1/2 a bale in there.
