Your chickens bored of the same old garden? Well look no further than a 'scrabbling ground'! Just put old grass clippings, dead leaves, old twigs etc in an area (preferably enclosed so the matter doesnt go everywhere [e.g. in the WIR, if you have one]) to attract plenty of bugs for your chickens to feast on. Don't forget you can add mealworms, treats etc to the area for added enjoyment!

cost - NOTHING!!!!

Review - "They're so good, we've got 2 in our garden!"

Good idea :) I was thinking of creating a 'stumpery' in my garden so the chicks have something to peck about on, over and under as well as giving my cockerel a crowing post  . There is some demolition work going on near me and I have asked the workmen for some smallish stumps. They think I'm barking but said they would oblige. I'm now all excited about planning out my 20m fenced garden to be a chicky paradise. I got bored with having a pretty cottage garden full of perennials that took hours of back breaking work and that everyone but me seemed to like, and this weekend I managed to convince my OH that a garden makover is due . . . for the chickens. Can't wait to get started.

We created a 'bug hotel' from logs - school project - essentially its a lattice of logs built up in layers, some with holes drilled into them and a bit of straw stuffed between layers. The bugs move in and the chickens brecome obsessed :vom:

The hotel has been demolished once or twice as enthusiasm peaks

Our ranging area contains lots of shrubs and a big cherry tree that is merrilly dumping its leaves all over their area. The girl love scratching around in the fallen leaves catching slugs and bugs. Its fab when one of them gets hold of a big juicy slug and they all chase each other around trying to steal it - its like a scene from the Keystone Cops. Never fails to make us laugh

You can breed your own mealworms. The packs come from Wiggly Wigglers to get you started and then it's simply a case of getting a system going. All the instructions are included in the pack.

I have to say that hubby does my mealworm breeding as creepy crawlies freak me out.
