Chortle Chook
I had to take a couple of my chooks to the vet as they had the sneezes. I thought that as soon as the vet opened the box they would squawk and flap but not a bit of it. Doodle sat in the box looking all around her while Dill was being examined, then when it was her turn she sat quite happily on the table letting the vet listen to her breathing etc. and then . . . produced a bonny egg right there on the table! Anyone else got some odd egg laying stories?
migsy
Great! Did you let the vet keep the egg? Mind you with their fees .....
Chortle Chook
I did let the vet have the egg but the fees did not get reduced
MarkBevBen
Awww that's fab and good of you to let your vet have the egg too I've no funny tales as yet, but in the early days one of our girls laid an egg in the middle of their Eglu run - that was a picture trying to get it out in one piece! Lavenders_Blue
I've had quite a few in the run, mostly in the early days when our ex batts had just arrived and hadn't got the hang of laying in a nest box. The best one though was from Bella, again not long after we brought her home. She was free ranging in the garden and for 20 minutes or so paced the fence looking very agitated and squawking away. Hubby and I had no idea what was wrong with her and we were starting to get quite worried until all of a sudden she crouched down on the patio... and layed an egg! Amazingly, it remained in tact Thankfully they soon worked the nest box out and we no longer have such displays of extreme egg laying
..lay a little egg for me
We have 6 hens, only one of which actually lays in the nestbox where she should! Two or three of them have taken a liking to my horse's stable and lay in the corner where the straw is built up and is hidden by the winter horse rug that is hanging up at the back of the stable. What they will do when I start bringing the horse in at night and putting his rugs on, I don't know. The other two decided they prefer the hay barn and make little nests on top of the straw or hay bales. Of course as I use the bales up they have to make new nests. When we let them out of the coop in the morning they make a dash for their favoured laying sites. The upside of all this is that, as most of them seem to prefer roosting in the nestbox, at least their eggs are clean. However the best, odd egg-laying place I heard of was a friend of a friend who had a chicken who used to come in through the cat flap, march through the house to the spare bedroom and settle down on the pillow to lay her egg. One morning the lady's sister was staying and awoke to find a feathery bottom in her face!!!
Chortle Chook
That really is the best story ever and should win a prize, but I bet the little chick did not get one that time.
beach chick
one of mine laid on my foot once... I'd brought her in because she was having a softie, went to look at her a couple of hours later, picked her up - softie in the cardboard box - and then she laid a perfect one right on my foot!! luckily the dog was there to clear it up.... dancing cloud
My Chance dug a tunnel under the fence and used to head for next door to lay her egg every day, until discovered after a few days trotting back through . I could see a neat little pile of eggs from my side, so dropped a note to my neighbour (who loves the girlies) to explain why there was breakfast waiting to be collected! She later sent a note back to say thank you to Chance
daxigirl
Nothing like a bit of 'al fresco' laying.
Janty
My mini wellies lay on top of the quail run and then kick them down into the run so that they smash. However, today I have set up a deep tray and a trug on top of the quail run with aubiose and straw and they have each produced a lovely little brown egg in their new nesting boxes.
