Calling on chick sexers/guessers!

Recommended Posts

Top one is a boy I'd say, and the blue too. Not sure about the last white one, I'd be inclined to say boy too, sorry. You got your eggs from the same place as me didn't you? Which means ours are related and my two girls have no sign of combs or wattles at all. I posted a thread a few days ago, the older growers one, and my Orps are there. I think mine are about 13/14 weeks now. The boys were obvious and were culled a few weeks ago. The white boy in particularly was horrid, a real bully and built like a brick out house.

I got my eggs from Cockerdoodlequack - is that where yours were from?

I can't bring myself to cull these. At 10 weeks old, the top one is the lovliest, friendliest chicken that I have. He's like a parrot in that you go outside and he flies onto your shoulder and will happily remain there whilst I get on and do bits.

I suppose I had better resign myself to what the fate of these will be and also make a note to self not to hatch anymore. I get far to attached to the little chicklets!

I felt the same way about our buff Orp boy  But I know from previous experience the longer I leave it the harder it gets. I cried my heart out and was devastated to have to cull our black Orp Boris. He was nine months old when he crowed and I'd always said I'd give them until then. But he was such a lovely boy, we all loved him, he was part of the family, so it was incredibly difficult to do. These latest boys had until they were about eight weeks. They were hatched under my broody Brahmas, enjoyed a summer of free ranging on the grass with their mums having the time of their lives. Knowing how hard it was to lose Boris made it easier for me to cull the boys when I did.

Seeing as though I seem only capable to hatch mostly boys I've decided from now on to only hatch birds I can use for the table too. I'm sick of the waste  A friend has just started breeding cuckoo Marans so that my broodies all sorted for eggs next year. Marans meat has been our favourite so far, that has to be the way to go.
