chris_21
hi there i have a big problem on my hands and i don't know what to do basicly i got up this morning and checked my chickens and in one of the chicken sheds where my pekin's and polands are i walked in and found 4 of them dead it was quiet hard for me to deal with i carn't understand why they have died i check them over and a couple of them had lice i carn't understand what they have died of. Can lice kill chickens? well anyway i got them all out and sprayed the whole area in poultry houseing spray and i put that lice powder stuff on the chickens now i don't want any of the other one's to die i actully have butterflys in my stomach. the one's that died was a lavender pekin a chamois poland, frizzle gold laced poland and a black pekin. the lavender pekin looked a bit under the weather yesterday but i just thought she was cold with all the stong winds we had now the cockeral and her sister look all unhappy with out her. Is there any thing else they could of died of and is there anything else i can do. thanks. Edited November 15, 2010 by Guest
Plum
So sorry, how terrible for you. I don't know if lice would kill so many at same time I'd check out their quarters for red mite as well. With them all dying at once I wonder if it was too cold for them? Polands aren't that tough but I thought Pekins were quite hardy Is there any problems with droppings. Check the others for weight loss and signs of respiratory infections etc., Would it be worth having a vet look at them?

abwsco
How awful for you Could be worth having a vet do a PM incase it's something that could affect your others.

Ain't Nobody Here
I think it's worth starting with your local vet. They could always point you in the direction of an expert if they can't help. I hope you get to the bottom of it. It's a horrible thing to have happened . Christian
How awful for you. Sorry to hear it. I too would ask a vet to do a PM. It could be poisoning as so many died overnight?

CluckyBucks
My goodness, how terrible You have my deepest sympathies. I would get an expert opinion in the form of a PM because it could be something that could potentially harm your other chickens. Thinking of you. xx xx
chris_21
well a very close friend of mine who is a vet came round today and checked the dead chickens out and he said they got pneumonia which all works out as the day before they passed away they was out in the wet and cold weather all day as they are the youngest chickens i have they were about 16 weeks old it didn't cross my mind to pop a couple of heat lamps in there to dry them off and to keep them warm now i feel so guilty as it's mainly my faulty why they died. well now in the shed is a couple of heat lamps and the rest of my pekins and my young polands will stay in the shed all winter now. Ain't Nobody Here
What a shame but at least you know what it was and that you can do something to prevent it happening again.
