gongladosh
We acquired our first chicken of fate tonight! The poor little thing had a bit of a close call with a car on a country road this morning - fortunately she survived albeit minus a number of feathers. My girlfriend was one of several people who tried to catch her but failed, after asking neighbours, "Ooops, word censored!"ody knew any local hen owners... After work, we decided to see if we could find the hen, so after an hour of searching country lanes in the dark, we found her sat in a shrub looking sorry for herself. After a further half hour of chasing her through gorse bushes in the dark, we managed to grab her (lots of noise, lots more feathers lost). We *had* to go and try to find her - there are plenty of foxes and cats in that area and she was clearly lost. She's now recovering at her new home, indoors in a hen carrier box with some food and water. If she survives her ordeal (and I guess tonight is probably crunch time), we'll be setting up our spare Eglu for her early tomorrow, and at some point she'll have three friends to join. Fingers crossed!
PeckyBeak
Good on you for making such an effort to save a little chicken in distress. hope she makes it and has a good life with you and her new friends
gongladosh
Good news - she survived the night and seems to be recovering nicely. When we put her in her run, after a quick peck of some food, she ran into her eglu and hid in a corner, but when she saw the three other hens we have, she came straight out and started talking with them. Following yesterday's adventure, we've decided to call her Houdini! She's a beautiful little Sussex Star (I think). The next thing I need to do (other than see if she needs to go to the vet - but she does look in good condition) is check that she is actually a 'she'. I'll post some photos tonight and hopefully someone will be able to help.

gongladosh
Here are some photos of Houdini... We're not sure what breed she is (although we suspect Sussex Star), or what age she is (13 or so weeks perhaps?). Finally, and this is a very important one - is she a girl? Can someone make an educated guess please? And here is the welcoming committee... Sorry if these are a little blurred - it's the best I could manage at the time!
