Ozzie woke me up at 4am today, demanding to go out. most unusual. then when I got up at 7.15 he wanted to go straight out again, and didnt ask for any breakfast. very unusual. so I kept an eye on him - he was eating a lot of grass and threw it up, and then when I took him for a short walk he just went very slowly, eating grass all the way.

he has looked very hangdog and guilty all day, so I reckoned he'd eaten something he shouldnt and took him to the vet this afternoon to check him out. she examined him, couldnt find much wrong apart from stomach pain (and the vomiting), so gave him a painkiller and some anti-vom drugs and said to take him out on lead only so I could see what came out the other end.

 

got home from the vet's, took him in the field on the lead - and immediately found what he'd had. he has eaten a whole, 454g waitrose christmas pudding left over from last year that he had sneaked off an open shelf by the laundry room. obviously grapes/raisins/currants are toxic for dogs and can cause kidney failure - so he is now in the vet hospital, on a drip overnight. his blood tests are so far normal; an x-ray shows there's no obstruction in the gut.

 

so now we just wait. silly labradors! and stupid me, I'd forgotten we even had the pudding, let alone where it was.

My springer once ate a whole box of celebrations from under the xmas tree. Was up all night with her - it was like the Somme but she recovered to fight (or steal) another day Fingers crossed

My dog once unwrapped (!) and ate a pile of chocolate christmas presents I had left upstairs ready for delivery, They included several bars of green & blacks and a few boxes of Thorntons continentals - she didn't have the decency to be even slightly unwell afterwards, although she was rather 'windy'!

just spoke to the vet. Oz is doing ok, not been sick again which is good. but he hasnt poo-ed since at least mid-day yesterday, so they are going to give him a laxative and see what comes out ( ) before they decide if he can come home today or stay another night. it doesnt sound as if there are signs of kidney failure so I'm hoping that's good - although the vet did say they can take several days to appear. also there is no formula as to how much grapes/raisins can cause it, its down to individual metabolism he says. so still got everything crossed here.

thank you all - I am bit twitchy to say the least but trying to hold out til 4pm before I phone again... its so weird without him, even if he's just asleep on the kitchen sofa he's THERE iykwim?

Oh I hope he's ok now, dogs can be so silly at times can't they? They just don't realise how much they worry us. Keeping my fingers crossed for him.

just spoke to the vet, still no poo although the nurses have taken him out onto grass etc. so he is staying there for the night and if nothing in the morning then an enema under general anaesthetic. my poor hound! (and poor vet/nurse, apparently there is 'quite a lot' in there

knowing oz, he will go out again in a minute, produce a huge one and I'll get the call to go and get him when I'm halfway down a huge glass of wine...

hi and thank you for asking. he is still in vet hosp as of now, sunday pm; he had an enema under sedation today which has cleared him out. vet is waiting to see if he can 'go' on his own before deciding whether he can come home tonight or not, but presumably if he's had a good clear out then it might take a while! (spoke to nurse at 3.15 pm and nothing had happened post-enema...)

just had my mum round for lunch- she is going into hospital tomorrow for a bladder cancer op inc removal of growth and poss chemo immediately, so quite honestly I could do with a quiet evening without driving 30 mins there and back to get the dog in the dark tonight - much though I miss him, I want to know he is ok before he comes home because with mum and all....

thanks Laura. vet phoned about an hour ago, they are keeping him in tonight tho he's fine in himself he has not 'produced' anything!! hopefully I can get him home tomorrow.

If it is practical for you time wise it might be worth offering to go in to walk him. Some dogs don't like going on the lead or in hospital kennel runs.

I will suggest that when I phone tomorrow morning chucky mama - it's a 30-35 min drive to vet hosp from here, and I could go all that way, have him be delighted to see me, still produce nothing, and then I'd have to leave him there again... so am reckoning that to do it tonight could be counter-productive really.

I wouldn't worry about tonight and tomorrow it's best left if there is a chance it will upset him too much. It depends on the dog and how freely he poos in stressful situations

I reckon he'll get the all clear sometime tomorrow, by all accounts he is absolutely fine in himself, all wiggly and waggly and chatting up the nurses... so we just need a poo and then he can come home!!

Hello, hope your Mum is ok and that Ozzie is home soon (it never rains, but it pours!?)

I just wanted to echo what others have said - I had a dog who had to stay in "hospital" for four days, it turns out that she hadn't "had a poo" (sorry, too much info), the whole time she was there, purely because no one took her out, she was expected to "go" in her kennel, which most dogs won't do. The vets didn't tell me there was a problem and we walked home and she must have pooed about eight times in the 10 minute walk home. I was really cross with the vet for not telling me she hadn't been (but actually, I wonder if anyone noticed). Ozzie might just prefer to "go" at home or without strangers watching etc etc?
