Old Speckled Hen
Have you celebrated anywhere strange? Newly married, many years ago, my husband took me to Kenya where we had Christmas lunch entertained by a black Santa in full red and white regalia. The menfolk all wore jacket and tie in the sweltering heat while us ladies were resplendent in shimmering dresses while our menfolk had to sweat it out.....daft or what? Another time I was hiking in the Costa Rica jungle with my daughter and we ended up in a vermin and insect infested shack. I couldn't sleep with all the crackling and shirmishing of horrible creatures and spent most of the night out in the open chain smoking to keep the bugs away. Willow
No where exotic, spend a Christmas in Austria and one or two in Switzerland but I like being at home for Christmas. When we were first married we had a microwave and a sandwich maker/grill but no cooker and were seriously hard up as interest rates had gone up so much all our money went on our mortgage so we treated ourselves to steak for Christmas dinner and had the sweetest little Christmas tree that I decorated by getting several metres cheap ribbon and covered it in bows and a basic set of light from woolies. It looked lovely That was such a nice Christmas
Cinnamon
Our first tree was only 12 inches high,in a pot. We planted it out in the garden & its really massive now - & I mean REALLY massive We always Christmas at home & on our own,if we can. Cranfield Kate
went to The Harvester one year. got plastered.... it was really nice actually and saved me cooking. the only downside was no leftovers when i sobered up and fancied picking at stuffing... craftyhunnypie
Salzburg, Maria Alm ( near Zell am See), Entrischenbrunn (near Munich ish) & Montreal Canada - lived in all these places. Loved my Christmas times in Salzburg. Didn't like it in Maria Alm as I was working. Grrr. The 2 other places were a bit grr too as they were with past horrid partners. Spent a lot in York - lovely there at Xmas. I love the cobbled streets. This year away in Devils Bridge - Wales. In a nice hotel with a big fire. Plus next year I will be living not far from Devils Bridge. We'll be at the Hafod Hotel this year - can't wait. Emma.x
Clur
We've always spent Christmas at home or with immediate family, but last year my friend and her hubby spent Christmas day camping in an inactive volcano in Hawaii. The pictures they took are fab!
Mrs Webmuppet
When I was a young thing, I spent Christmas Day on a coral island off Pattaya, Thailand. Instead of turkey there was a lovely fish barbie.............no family, no little brother to annoy me, it was soooo peaceful.
beach chick
Singapore when I was a baby, and Argentina when I was a teenager - both to do with Dad's job. Can't remember Singapore, but Argentina at Christmas is just not Christmas. the best one ever was the 4 of us here when the children were younger. we (me and DH) had champagne and scrambled eggs at 10am. no one got dressed til 1pm, when we went for a walk on the beach. then at 4 we had roast turkey - and the kids had turkey dinosaurs and chips as they were both in a non-eating stage!!! Minnie&Moose
Many many years ago as a research student I spent Christmas on a small island, covered in rainforest, in the southeastern part of Sierra Leone. Christmas lunch was roasted duiker (common forest antelope) with sweet potatoes and local greens - and the best bit was my mum and my landlady (who had become a family friend) were also there . I'd been living on the island for more than 12 months at this point so hadn't seen any of my family or UK friends during that time. Communications weren't that great either because letters took months and often went missing, and to phone involved a 400 mile round trip on my 100cc motorcycle on some of the 'best' roads in West Africa
