Margalot
Hi, Bit confused here! and angry My ED has a pay as you go phone with Vodafone. She has been off from school with flu and todays is her first day back, so I checked her balance (£0) as expected then topped her up with £10 just incase she needs me to pick her up early today. any way infront of my very eyes the £10 balance became £8.50 then dropped to £5.50 in 30 seconds! I contacted vodafone who told me she had recieved a MMS message from 80111 and she should send a text STOP to the number and it was probably a ringtone thing she had signed up to. They also gave me an 0800 no to call on the land line. So I have just called them and its 08000mumdad a really hard to hear message and its a reverse call charge. I spoke to someone there who told me they have to deduct another 4 charges @ £1.50 a go as they have basically been waiting so they can take the money. I have told them to stop sending her messages after that but the chap seemed very blase and dont think for one moment they will remove her number, can anyone offer any advise?? The Dogmother
No advice to add, but I'm sure that contacting Oftel will help. The number you posted has this site perhaps you can contact them via that. It looks like someone has set up a reverse charge call to her mobile number - perhaps a prank? Geoid
I doubt its a prank, as the person receiving the text/phone call has to accept the charges, one of her friends maybe?
The Dogmother
Could she have accepted the charges, not realising what it was?
Alis girls
We had a different problem with a porn site - which sent a txt to ES who didnt realise what it was till he pressed thinking it was a txt from a friend. Had a devil of a job to get money back - OH threatened to go to the papers and rang Oftel. Hope you get it sorted.
Margalot
Well, we think that its one of her friends reversing the charges. She gets a call form an unknown number when she answers it it plays a short message form a friend asking if she wants to accept, she says no or hangs up and yet is still charged the £1.50! She is under strict instructions now not to answer number unknown Cant believe yesterday she had over £14 deducted! Honestly dont know best option, If I give her a contract phone can I apply a limt to her spend? I am sure she would have no problem running up a massive bill dont know whats best? The Dogmother
I would block those numbers - if you can't do it on the phone, then contact her provider. f I give her a contract phone can I apply a limt to her spend? I am sure she would have no problem running up a massive bill dont know whats best? That's why i stick to a PAYG for Rosie I top it up each month and tell her that it's for calling me, not social stuff. When that amount is gone, it doesn't get topped up again until the 1st of the month. Call me hard, but at that age, they need to learn some budgeting skills
Margalot
I know thats why we went PAYG but honestly If I top up with £10 its gone straight away, so I dont top up any more frequently thah once a month. But then she goes off into town and has no credit to even text me if she misses the bus! She does make me cross
The Dogmother
Rosie is the same, she knows that she won't get any more credit and is starting to understand how to use it carefully. It's hard when all their friends are texting furiously
sage
A friend of mine got her then 15 year old a contract phone. She took her phone on holiday and ran up a bill for nearly £1000 in 1 month. Sage
Cinnamon
We had a similar problem a couple of years ago. Vodafone told us the only solution was to get a new SIM card, which they provided, free of charge. My daughters have had 'the talk' on never to download ringtone/accept charges, & are pretty good at toeing the line. The threat of no phone is worse than not having the latest ringtone,& with our phones you can just use any song track you add to the phone yourself anyhow.
