Jules.
I know how good people on here are with techy-computery things, & so I'm asking your opinions please. Our eMac is on its last legs so we need to replace it with a laptop. We'd love an Apple laptop, but finances don't really stretch to it, & so we're looking at buying this one from John Lewis http://www.johnlewis.com/231070850/Product.aspx This will be our only computer, used by all the family. Mercedes55
I've had about 5 laptops over the years. Two were HP, 2 were Acer and my current one is a MacBook. I would say the HP ones were worse than the Acer laptops as they were more expensive to buy in the first place and I had countless problems with the jackplug breaking inside which was never covered by the warranty as they deemed it to be 'wear and tear' even though I was always careful with it. I have a HP, which has had a couple of problems, first the power pack stopped working, then the hard drive corrupted , both were fixed under warranty with no problems and excellent customer service. I have also had the jackplug problem (only once ) as well but it was outside the warranty so fixed at my own expense and don't know what their position on it would have been. Space Chick
Dell are fairly reliable and easy to fix... They are work horses in the laptop department
Mercedes55
I am a total Apple convert so it's difficult for me to even think of a regular windows laptop to recommend. However I do understand that the expense of them stops many people buying them. Apart from my 5 laptops I'm also onto my 3rd workstation and 2 of those were Dell and were pretty okay, but not as good as my current iMac. However I have heard that Dell are not as reliable these days as they used to be I would stick with buying from JL as at least you get a 2yr warranty
poachedegg
Have just asked OH and his thoughts were it is an older processor, not a bad price for the spec, 2 yr guarantee is good, but doesn't know too much about ACER. Hope that is of some help!
Sageandonion
I have an Acer Aspire 5732 Z which I presume is an older model of the one you're considering. I've had it a year and the only problem I've had with it has been of my own making. I managed to kill the screen by leaving in my camera lead and pulling the screen down to close it. Some kind of electronic scarring occurred across the screen. A friend managed to get the screen replaced for me luckily. I use mine for browsing the internet mainly, emails and watching the odd DVD. My son has a compaq laptop similar to mine but it's a lot slower. If I had the money I'd go for an Apple too!
Redwing
You get a lot for your money with an Acer and they are better than they used to be.. A lot of companies use Dell laptops for their staff which when you consider the useage and lifespan they must have to cope with they must be pretty good and as Debs says they are the workhorses of the laptop world I'm on my second Samsung laptop and have to say that its been absolutely brilliant, I also have a Dell as a company laptop which I also like, both are very good and easy to use My recommendation would be to look at the ones you like in a store then surf the net to get the best price - nothing beats actually seeing something up close! craftyhunnypie
Sorry to hijack a thread, but mums after a tablet - what's the best? Not a thing I'm into..I love my netbook instead. Between me & hubby, we have Asus & Toshiba. The Toshiba is excellent! PC world will have some good offers, as will Curry's & Comet. Buy before the Vat increase! P.S Samsung are excellent.. our main laptops are Samsung & Toshiba. Samsung is brilliant - as already said by Tasha. Emma.x

Stevie
I bought a new laptop last week-a Hewlett Packard G56-105SA and it seems fine to me.My only critisms at moment are it comes with Windoze 7 which im not used to as i previously had XP and my fingers keep hitting wrong keys due to slightly different layout. Previously i used an Acer laptop and until last week when it crashed-that gave me 5 trouble free years.
