Supplements and tonics, advice please

Recommended Posts

Sorry for all these questions but C- Day is nearly here.

Just wondering what supplements/tonics people give their hens on a regular basis - daily or weekly or whatever and does this vary from season to season? I have Apple Cider Vinegar at the ready which I was planning on putting in the water on a daily basis (is that right?). I don't want to get two things which effectively serve the same purpose and am just wondering what is the best combination of lotions and potions to try and keep hens healthy.

Thank you....again!

To be honest, I don't give mine any... but maybe I'm just a meanie! They seem fit and well and happy enough without.

I was given a bottle of lifeguard back in the summer from a neighbour who had given up hen keeping and put it in my girls water. After they refused to drink for nearly 3 days (it's clearly revolting stuff!) I gave it away to someone else.

They do get wormed 3x per year with Flubenvet though.

I wouldn't give apple cider vinegar on a daily basis. It is meant as a sort of pick-me-up and I was advised by a top breeder to only give it when a chicken was a bit off colour, otherwise they become immune to its benefits. He said to only give about 5mls per litre for about three days. This has worked every time for me. As for other supplements, some people give lots and some none - with equally good results! I try to give mine a bit of extra protein in the depths of winter when they are off-lay and regrowing their feathers. Other than that, they just get good pellets and a small treat before they go to bed. Actually, as long as your birds have pellets and water available, I wouldn't worry about supplements until you get used to chicken keeping and maybe feel they are lacking something. Good luck with your new girls and just enjoy them :D:D:D
